Stink Bugs: Check-off by state, please
Comments (55)I live in the northwestern corner of CT and had a fair amount of trouble with vine borers and squash bugs last year with my zucchini plants. But this year the infestation of brown marmorated stink bugs and squash bugs has been absolutely discouraging. I am a "newbie" when it comes to organic gardening, so having an infestation like this felt really devistating. Until reading about all the problems with stink bugs that were reported on this forum, I thought I was alone and doing something terribly wrong! They started on my zucchini plants and then seemed to "overnight" take over the pumpkin patch, gourds, tomatoes, cukes, and finally (although maybe it was something else)the eggplants. The stink bugs and squash bugs lived in harmony with Colorado potatoe beetles, all sharing the fruits of my labor! When the hurricaine came through last week, I decided not to continue trying to eradicate them, but to just pull everything out and start fresh next year. Too bad I didn't see this forum earlier, I don't think I have enough left to create a trap crop. One thing that seemed to work, although it was very short lived, was a mixture of 1 gallon of water, 2 Tbsp dish washing liquid and 2 tsp peppermint oil. This killed them on contact, but I imagine it would need to be applied on a reular basis, and I don't know how good it is to use the dish soap repeatedly. Thanks everyone, for the input and ideas. I'll make notes of what seems to work for others....See MoreBosch Dishwasher Auto Cycle Time Increase?
Comments (28)My Bosch is about 6 years old so things may have changed. My dishwasher only has auto times, pots n pans, normal, rinse hold, drain rinse. The one thing I have found that really matters on time is the temp of the water going into the machine. If I run the hot water to the sink until its hot and then start the dishwasher the average wash time on regular will be 96-103 minutes. If I don't then its 116-125. If the times make a big jump and stay there say 150-199 then the water heater in the dishwasher is not working. On my particular machine this means the solder joint on the main logic board to the heater has broken/melted away yet again. Its happened 3 times in all these years. Luckily I found a site that explained this the first time and said it can be repaired. Repair is not to hard if you can solder and don't mind taking the front of the machine apart. Open it up, remove the back panel from the control board, its easy to see what solder joint has melted away, and resolder it. After that the dishwasher is happy and the times drop back to normal....See MoreAnyone else hate their Bosch dishwasher?
Comments (71)Bosch does not stand behind it’s parts or technical assistance. My dishwasher (Ihave two of them in my kitchen) is about 3 years old when the programming panel on the door stopped working. i ordered and installed a new one from Bosch and the panel continued to say ”add salt” even though my dishwasher (800 series) doesn’t have a salt dispenser. I then had to hire a professional to come to my home and fix the unit. After a long struggle, he couldn’t fix it either, so he called Bosch and was told to replace the harness. I ordered the harness, arranged for the repair guy to come back. He installed the new harness and it still didn’t work. So he called Bosch again and this time was told to replace the control unit on the right side of the dishwasher. I again ordered the new part, the process was repeated and the dishwasher still didn’t work. Now I’m $600+ into repairs and the unit has been unusuable for 2 months. I subsequently found out that the right side control unit has nothing to do with programming, even though we were trying to fix a programming issue. Finally the repair man determined that the replacement control door unit that I had ordered from Bosch and replaced was defective. So I called Bosch told them the above and asked for a free replacement of their defective part. They made me send them all my bills, including the one for their bad part. Then they made we wait only to be told there is a one month guarantee on their electrical parts, and since the part was purchased some 2 months earlier, they would NOT send me a free replacement. They knew the one month guaranty was exceeded because of their technical people telling us to replace multiple other parts that didn’t solve the problem and they knew I had purchased two of their dishwashers at the same time, yet they refused to replace the defective replacement for the door control unit. I replaced that part a second time using another vender and my didhwasher now worksOtis. How greedy is this company given the circumstances just outlined? Your dishwasher will eventually break and you will find yourself in my situation. Can you trust this company to treat you properly? I don’t think so, and neither should you. I’ve written this to protect you, so I hope you act accordingly....See MoreNew water heater stinks
Comments (6)If you suspect SRB colonization of your WH all you need do is raise the temp on the WH to 140 F for 2 hours. BE CAREFUL DURING THAT TIME AS THE HOT WATER WILL BE REALLY HOT. Then drain the WH and refill and reset the temp setting to a normal setting and you're good to go. If the smell doesn't return then you solved the problem. EDIT You don't want your WH set to 140 Ffor everyday use... only for the above procedure. This post was edited by justalurker on Thu, Nov 21, 13 at 15:48...See MoreRelated Professionals
