So you are going to use the living room as a TV room and use the family room as what? Why does the piano have to go into the living room?

It looks like your dining area is small, so I'd consider using some of that family room for dining.

@shirlpp - Thanks for the response. Yes, that's the plan - to use the family room for dining and small seating to hang out. I guess the piano could go there too, that's a good idea. That way the living room can be the main seating area and home-theatre.

What is the focal point? The projector wall? When not in use will the wall look empty?

That solid wall might be your best bet for a projector.

What about the wall that is out of view. The 4th wall.

I think the wall that shirlpp marked in red would be the best place for your sofa, the main sofa, three seater.

And then I would suggest two swivel chairs, instead of the other sofa. A seating arrangement like this.

And then do projector on family room wall.

But if you want to use the long, solid wall for the projector, I would suggest floating the sofa so that it directly faces that wall, sofa would have back to family room wall - and put a sofa table in back of sofa to anchor it. And then the two swivel chairs, positioned as in arrangement above.

I am trying to avoid putting a sofa with back to windows, which is another option, but not preferred.

Are you going to have both a TV and a projector? Or changing from a TV to a projector? Note that you need really dark rooms for projectors, so you'll need full blackout curtains, and even then you'll probably still have light coming through at least during the day. You'll probably need to block the doors as well. If you can afford it a large TV may be a better option. You can get pretty close to a 4K TV - we sit about 8 feet from ours and could sit closer. That would free up quite a bit of the room for other uses (game space? bar space?). You could float your couch, put a bar table behind it for additional seating with stools, then use the remainder of the space for other fun. (Using the uninterrupted wall for the projector/TV wall).

ETA: You don't want to sit too far from your projector/TV wall. 17 feet away is much too far, so you will have to float your seating. You definitely do not want to use the wall opposite the window for your projector wall since that will have the worst light effect.

@anj_p Thanks for the detailed answer. A TV would work as well for the reasons you outlined. I did some reading about TV distance after your mentioned it and you're right.. Even for a 60 to 70 inch TV, the max distance is 9 ft. So we def have to pull the couch further away from the wall. The only challenge is the opening towards the front entrance. The couch would be in visible from the front door. How do I tackle that? Should there be a screen at the opening? Any other options ?

having a visible couch isn't a design issue at all... is that your concern? one of my dream houses had that exact situation. TVs are less sensitive to light... although they still will reflect. if that's your concern, an inexpensive solution would be to add a curtain. next, barn door. next pocket door.

Here is a 3D rendition with some of the suggestions incorporated. With the curtain, pocket door, and hinged door. It may be easier to have curtains in the theatre room if children/folks will be coming and going in and out of the room for snacks and so on. The doors opening and closing or maybe not be closed each time may become an issue. You decide. The old fashioned theatre way with curtains was to keep out the light but was also quiet when people went back an forth to the concession stand. Must have that popcorn when watching a good movie. It makes a difference both the popcorn and quiet curtains. Just food for thought. I had friends who had a large screen and I have to say WOW it was amazing to watch something on that screen.

So here is the 3D rendition: (please note that the placement of the various elements are what is being suggested only not the colors or style)

In it you will find:

1. One upright piano
2. Three floor lamps for those times when you want to use the room for get togethers
3. One round coffee table (easier to get around and on the knees)
4. One 6'3" three seater sofa positioned 7'4" away from and in front of the screen.
5. One 4'11" love seat
6. One 6' TV console
7. One 4'3" entry table with a lower shelf and three drawers for storage with two table lamps again for those times when the room is being used as a living room.
8. One 1'11" x 1'11" corner side table
9. Three over the couch/chair side tables that can be easily moved around and used as TV trays
10. Two occasional chairs
11. One large area rug
12. Art on the walls, large vases with dried flowers here and there as well as throw pillows for fun. Maybe even for the occasional toss.
13. One large basket with extra pillows and blankets for family and guests.
14. Pocket doors on the large hallway entrance covered by double layered block out curtains. Very English and theatre like.
15. Matching curtains and sunblock shades over the large windows in the room. The curtains and shades can be opened easily when viewing a show is not taking place.
16. You can also put a curtain over the door that leads into the kitchen/dining area that matches the others. Again, it makes for easier and quieter passage to and fro.

NOTE: I did one shot without the curtains and the pocket doors only.
