You should have good luck with them, both seen to do really good out here... There are others that also do good, but they take a little more work... Ventricosa & Alata are both good ones to start with... "Just one more question: what potting material do you use for it?" That's a hard one / Ask 100 people & You'll probably get 100 different answers... I'm sure everyone agrees on Peat Moss, but after that it seems to be more or less personal preference on what to mix with the peat... Just make sure to get plain peat moss & not one that has anything added to it (like plant food)... You want the soil to be Nutrient Free & Well Drained... All my older Neps that haven't been repotted are growing in a mix of peat, perlite & vermiculite... Now I primarily use a mix of peat & chopped New Zealand sphagnum moss, a little perlite and/or vermiculite & orchid bark (small nuggets) as a soil mix & have just recently started adding a little volcanic rock (small/crushed ~ the type used for Bonsai) to the mix... Works For Me... Stay away from the green decorative sphagnum moss you find at most nurseries & hardware stores... Use New Zealand Moss or the kind they sell for orchids / It's more of a yellow/gold color than green... Most likely if you're ordering them on line they'll be shipped bareroot & will be in shock when you get them... Use plastic pots with good drain holes / Put a little gravel or moss in the bottom to cover the holes... Plant them / Give them a good watering with distilled water / Put something like a Zip-Lock bag over the pot & keep them where they will get light, but not to much direct light for the first few days till they recover from being up rooted & shipped & all that... After that they should do good in a nice bright window... The more sun they get, the better the color & the bigger the pitchers... One thing that I've noticed, at least with my friends that keep killing them, is that they take "High Humidity" as meaning "Keep The Soil Soaking Wet"... You want to keep the soil "Moist", but not constantly soaked, it will rot them / A good misting a few times a day will do... Good Luck With Them, E G G

Oh, oops. I didn't scroll back up and read. The first post sounds like what mine is doing, but not the last post, and not the answer form sarracenia NW. I guess our plants are doing different things, because mine got yellow just about all over, and I think it is sunburn from moving it outdoors and into sun too quickly without hardening it off. It is definitely not being kept too wet. The soil is pretty dry and well-drained. It hasn't recovered but hasn't gotten worse either, so I'm just waiting to see what will happen.

...my local Lowes and Wal-mart only have Miracle Grow perilite- with added fertilizer. should I skip the perilite and just add some orchid bark to the mix? Or could I add pea gravel? I read that rubbing a dilute fertilizer on the leaves only would help make pitchers. I did it a while back and nothing bad or good happened. It might have been too dilute. When I repotted it I noticed that the peat moss was hard packed, so I took a pencil and mixed it around to airate it. Should I add some orchid bark to the soil? the pot has holes in the bottom also. Also, to fix the frog problem, should I put some slate on top of the soil and take it off when I need to water? Lighting:The lighting is currently one 15watt repti-glo uvb lamp designed for lizards and frogs, and one heat lamp (75 watt) i think is from Exo-terra, but im not sure because i threw the packaging out. but the heatlamp is designed ESPECIALLY for lizards. I may downgrade the heatlamp from a 75 watt to a 50.I have a cryptanthus next to it that has pink in it's leaves, and I heard that for it to do that it needs high light. the size of the tank is: 18"Dx18"Wx24"L Im not worried about it outgrowing the tank soon because it is in the exact center of it. the odd thing is about the onion-shape-bulb is that it developed at the top of the plant- at what I think is called the growing point. Whats even weirder is that it developed into about four new leaves-maybe it was four leaves compacted into a 'bulb'? ~Chris

I say none of your options are suitable for nepenthes. Give up or get a greenhouse its that simple
