Comments (25)Keep in mind that any living finish (brass or bronze) will wear or tarnish over time. Some are lacquered coated but that lasts until there a scratch, sunlight or chemicals (household cleaners) that remove or breakdown the coating. Oil Rubbed Bronze is one of the most complained about because the finish comes off. Actually it wears where it is is touched and highlights which it is supposed to do. There is a PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) finishes which is a plating tinted to a color like Bright Brass as an example. It is a hard finish that wears like chrome and should wear well if you don't like the high lights to tarnishing. PVD is also used on jewelry and other products....See MoreEmtek white or crystal knobs what style door?
Comments (5)I haven't seen "What Lies Beneath" and found Jack Nicholson's character in "Something's Gotta Give" too distractingly irritating to really notice the decor (maybe I need to watch it again with the sound off! LOL), so I can't really help you with specifics there. :-) Since you've got a simple ranch, I would keep the doors very simple too. I can easily see a Shakerish two-panel or even a single panel to echo your cabinetry, unless you're going very fussy with your new moldings which I think would be incompatible with your architecture. Because they're all on a different floor mixing in the six-panel style isn't as big a deal, although that's one of the very few things I do have a bit of a fetish for consistency about... PO put an addition on our house and used six-panel doors when the rest of the house has four-panel, and I think they just scream "addition". (Thankfully there are some of the old four-panel doors in the shed so we can swap them out eventually. Why he didn't use those instead of buying new doors is beyond me, considering how cheap he was on everything else!) I did go dig up some pictures of the SGG set and noticed a lot of use of French doors - would you consider using French doors (singles) on rooms that don't require privacy? Oh, and if you know the name of that discontinued SW paint, they'll almost certainly have the formula for it in their computer. Just for giggles, I'm daydreaming about a (partially) white and (faux) soapstone kitchen too, although it's much warmer... I've linked to pictures that have been serving as inspiration for said daydreams below. I don't know whose kitchen it is, it's probably from a magazine, but someone gave them to me a couple of years ago. Unless we win the lottery, mine'll be Ikea and Formica instead of custom and soapstone, but I think it'll still get the point across. BTW, you don't need a special tool to open the privacy knob sets that have a hole in the knob. We've always just used a nail or a bobby pin... in fact, in the houses where I babysat, the parents usually kept a nail on the top of the door casing because their mischievous little monstersoffspring ;-) would lock themselves into various rooms!...See MoreReplacing All Door Knobs - ORB or Antique Brass? Help!
Comments (17)live wire oak- Like happyafwife, in our area, ORB hasn't faded. It is used more often than not in new construction in the most upscale neighborhoods. That is why we felt 'safe' using it. I love the look of stained woodwork, too. But my old woodwork wasn't stained - it was a medium brown painted/glazed finish from the mid-1960's. After ~45 years and three owners, it looked terrible and needed to have something done. To strip and stain it all would have been cost prohibitive. So we opted to paint everything (cabinets, doors, baseboards, etc)a soft white. It makes the house look so much lighter and larger - I can't believe that too many potential buyers will be turned off by it....See MoreEgg knob vs. Round knob?
Comments (9)It's more about what feels easier to manipulate in your hand than the visual look. You might think it's "just" a doorknob--I did. But even tho I thought the round knobs were cool and modern-looking, and the eggs less modern, those round ones were too slippery. Also think ahead 10 or more years: For some people, hand strength wanes. Also, I don't know which manufacturer you're looking at, but the visual of the egg-shaped doorknobs does tend to morph into a flatter look if there's a "rose cover" -- the part that goes flush against the door itself -- that's fully round. So again, that's where the value of "looks" is diminished. From a distance, you don't see "egg," you see "round." I'll post a photo to show you what I mean. (Some manufacturers are different; I didn't buy this brand, I bought Baldwin, in a different finish, but the visual is the same.)
