Do you have laminate or LVT in the kitchen? Love it or hate it?
Comments (6)Are you my doppleganger, Mable? This is almost our exact circumstance, except we live here and don't rent. We are in a small ranch (in Alaska) and tore down the wall between the kitchen and the living/front door area. We are also on a slab, which limits us to engineered wood if we go with real wood. Almost universally, the local flooring folks are recommending LVT or laminate over the engineered hardwood - even though it would give them 3x more of our money if we went with real wood. They all say that the laminates will wear better/scratch less than the wood for the same water risks and are better with animals or men who don't take boots off at the door. Some of the newer laminates have much better systems for water-resistence, too. We are seriously looking at LVT's, which is a market that has exploded a lot over the past year or two. There are now loose lay LVT options, which are great because if a plank gets damaged you can just literally use a plunger to pull up the damaged board and replace it. There are also floating, click lock systems for LVT now. (We really don't want to glue down after pulling up all this crap from our foundation and hearing horror stories about glues interacting with concrete subfloors, even though glue down has distinct advantages in terms of not needing such a level subfloor and sounding less hollow.) We are still on the fence about it all, but my partner wants to go with a loose lay LVT floor (Kardean, XL Flooring Drop and Done or EZ-Lay). I don't love the look of the LVTs and am leaning towards laminate and taking the water risk to get a little bit of sheen and I think they reflect more light for our small home. I think the laminates look more realistic to wood, too. Currently, I'm researching a product from US Floors called CoreTec One and CoreTec Plus, which is marketed as a laminate with 100% waterproofing that is able to go over uneven surfaces....See MorePictures of SuperCore SPC Flooring?
Comments (96)I would like to get feedback on the Supercore Basics line. I am looking at Solitude for around 1,000 sf. I have an old wood subfloor that I am going to need to do a lot of leveling on. Where do you draw the line for telling someone that a 4.5mm floor is not for them? I know I only get a 12mil wear layer, but the fact that it is still Aluminum Oxide and has a stone composite core makes me feel it will be ok. Is there any difference in the locking system? The lock does not seem as hefty on the samples for the basics line. I get concerned that with an old pier and beam supported floor that has settled, even if I level the floor, will the less hardy locking system fail if I get slight movement with any further settling?...See Morevinyl plank or stained concrete home bar
Comments (10)I suggest looking at some of the SPC Rigid Core plank floors. Those have a limestone polymer core and can handle heavier furniture than the WPC plank flooring which is a wood polymer composite. The SPC will be able to handle moisture better, but you will have to use a moisture barrier on the concrete. Republic, republicfloor.com, SuperCore WeShipFloors.com and several others make the SPC flooring. I would call and ask questions if you find one you like....See MoreSuperCore WeShipFloors experiences?
Comments (31)@toycar77 Shaw Floorte Elite Prodigy HDR MXL Plus Golden Age was the one we were waiting on for over 6 months and then when that got pulled from market while we were waiting (bullet dodged apparently) we were waiting on one of their tile styles and the Shaw rep from our flooring retailer said those were being pulled too because of installation issues (I think the joints were cracking during install). They both are part of their new “mineral core” planks/tiles so might have something to do with the mineral core? They are “updating” them now but all we could find out was that it might be the end of the year (with no real known date at this time). I don’t know if the smaller planks are affected though (the Prodigy ones that aren’t MXL plus) because there was just the one color and size that we were interested in that tested well in our fabric test (at least the three samples we had at the time). They clearly released the product before it was actually ready so I’m not sure if I’d trust the “update” until it’s tested in the real world! Plus, at this point, it’s hard to have any faith that the new updated version will have a non-destructive finish. I would say fingers crossed on that one but I’d rather hope for finding something better sooner!...See MorePeke
