Comments (16)Hi That is the interesting part about the "Cool house" in Singapore. It is being designed entirely for plants that will not tolerate high temps. Warm / hot growers are no problem . Also I thought interesting was the primary occupants will be Bromeliads not orchids. I have used both evaporative cooling and refrigeration on my small area and both were miserable failures for opposite reasons lol. My average humidity is too high to allow EC to work particularly during summer. Refrigeration lowers temps but causes a corresponing drop in humidity. Both bad news for High altitude tropicals. Their yearly temps average way above mine without a winter respite like I have. Kew uses outside cold air during winter so gets a big break on operating costs during winter. Summers are also generally mild. So evaporative cooling is effective. But Singapore just like s. florida has no "cold " air lol I have a big break over Singapore in that I have around two months of tolerable conditions so the OC drop. Singapore does not have a single week !! This is particularly what caught my eye . Can't think of a worse location to build a "Cool house" Another thing from my own experience. I generally find heat tolerant tropicals far more adaptable to cool or even cold temps while cool to cold growers are far less adaptable to heat particularly without a night time drop. Another thing is the selection of species. Bromeliads, as a guess I'd say they can grow at least 80 percent of all species without any moderation at all. One serious problem for many would be rainfall. Gee a simple roof would handle that problem except for the high lights. There you could use no media perhaps with fans for quick drying. I grow several on hanging wires for that reason But here again I get a big break during winter. Rainfall is tolerable for at least two months as well as humidity drops, I can fall into almost ideal ranges for several weeks. I had always wanted to have a cool house even a very small one but could find no way to make it work at all let alone be practicle. I actively dislike Howard Belsey with his self-loathing for his English working class background, his academic feuds and his inability to keep his pants zipped. And his children all seemed to be stereotypical also, especially the younger son. You're right about the Kipps - the whole family not just Monty. What was really driving them? The daughter, Victoria, seemed to be a sexually manipulative b*tch and the mother was built up to be some kind of saint, but was really a cipher to me. I'm thinking I'll try White Teeth just because I've read so many raves about Zadie Smith as a writer & I want to see if the failure of this book in my eyes was just trans-Atlantic dissonance. Comments (14)Thank you folks! I've hit silly stress levels with this. :( Did another trip and finally remembered to take a plank with me to hold against the slabs. The only thing stopping me is the white flecks in the stone! They look like white paint splodges! What do you think? I think it feels like a blueish grey whe compared to our wall paint which also puts me in a dilemma. So, I also went to a large granite exchange place and took photos with other slabs I thought would be interesting/might work. I don't have pricing for them yet though. I believe the two whites are Marble which....is harder to maintain? I never cut 'on' the countertop so that's not an issue. Occasionally I'll make roti which I'll roll on the counters though. The other thing we have going on is that we are able to get the local quarry slab at 1.5" thickness whereas all others will be 1.25". Not a biggie, just a flexibility we have and also is noce as the current temporary counters are 1.5". What are your thoughts? One work better than the other? Anyone have a ballpark /sqft figure for Calcutta Apuano by any chance? Many Thanks!...See More
