How to keep bottom teeth straight?
Comments (10)I read online on a forum that someone posted that it was hard to keep the bottom straight so I am determining the feasibility of the project keeping the bottom teeth straight before embarking on a costly venture. What if I did and it goes crooked again? I would welcome personal experience input. I don't want permanent retainer. I had them off as kid, so now, like 30 years ago. I just hope that one tooth, if I do nothing won't go more crooked then it is now. It is hard to find a good ortho in the San Francisco bay area. I was at one for a consult about new retainers, but he was not willing to make them for me. He said, I would just be too lazy to wear them and it was pointless. But, I would like a second opinion....See MoreTeeth clenching. I need to do something.
Comments (44)Joanie--Where do you live? There is a craniofacial pain center at Tufts dentistry school in Boston that is terrific for TMJ. Unfortunately TMK falls between the cracks " of medicine, physical therapy, dentistry, etc. And as someone said above, it has many different causes. Some of the things that a place like Tufts might suggest: - A night guard, but one specifically for TMJ. They're different from the ones made for grinding, although they help with that too. The TMJ guards have a protuberance on top that holds your lower jaw in a certain position. - Manipulative physical therapy. These are the folks who actually lay hands on you. For TMJ, the physical therapist snaps on some latex gloves and actually massages pressure points inside your mouth. There are several jaw muscles that are hard to manipulate and cannot be relaxed through stretching etc. This can be a huge help. (If you can't find one of these professionals locally, at least buy a book about trigger points.) - Posture work. Someone can show you on a demonstration skeleton how a problem with back posture, shoulders, hips, knees or even feet can cause you to hold the jaw in a bad position. For example, tilt your hips, and y our shoulders have to tilt in the opposite direction. Then your neck tilts sideways to compensate. It's the way we're built. Computer work is a particularly bad offender when it comes to posture. - Relaxation techniques. As someone said above, stress isn't a particularly good word here. You can be happy as a clam and get terrible neck or TMJ pain from working at a computer without good eyeglasses. There is lots that can be done....See MoreHave you whitened your teeth with trays, not strips
Comments (25)Bunny, check with your orthodontist. I don’t think you are going to want to whiten your teeth while wearing the Invisaligns. Mine told me not to because when the buttons are removed there would be discolored patches where the buttons are attached. When I whiten mine now, I do not have a problem with drooling. The old ones (5-10 years ago), I did. The goop on the new style Whitestrips is very thick and the strips stick very tightly. My orthodontist suggested that once I apply the strips that I put my retainers on too to hold the strips in place. I believe the goop is safe to swallow. In fact, I think you can drink water while you are wearing them....See MoreWearing braces as an "older person" ...
Comments (36)Yes, runninginplace and Chispa! I didn't realize I'd have a bunch of little protrusions on my teeth when all this started. No one warned me about that either. Anyhoo, I've gotten used to them now (except when I look in the mirror sometimes). I'll be glad to be done with a couple of those. One other thing, Ida. I'm older and my orthodontist was concerned about my lower teeth being susceptible to too much movement due to bone loss. Bottom line is it turned out ok, but I had to go to a periodontist for evaluation to make sure I could even wear an appliance to have my lower teeth straightened again. They weren't too bad except for right in the very front so I could have lived with just straightening the uppers. However it delayed the start of my treatment just waiting around for appointments with the periodontist and then back with the orthodontist. Ugh! I was ready to get going, although I do appreciate the caution. And then the first several weeks or more is mostly just slight movement to make spaces to actually move the crooked teeth back into alignment. I guess you figured out all this, but it does seem very slow. And I too have no idea what to do with all those old trays, although the orthodontist says to keep at least a couple of old trays back in case he you lose a current set of trays. You usually have to go back, not forward. I suspect this happens more with teenagers but you never know. I recommend getting at least one extra case to carry around in your handbag....See MoreAnnegriet
