Need suggestions for in-cabinet and under-cabinet lighting

I plan to have stacked upper cabinets with glass doors (10' ceiling) and need suggestions on how to light them (pucks, strips, wired, wireless, etc.) as well as suggestions for under cabinet lighting. Our electrician ran the wires for the under-cabinet lights with a switch but failed to run any wires for the upper in-cabinet lights even though we discussed it. We've been on vacation and I'm just returning to see them not run and my builder is stating that drywall starts on Monday and that usually the cabinet maker runs the wires for those as they are low voltage?!?

If anyone could point me in the right direction, I'd greatly appreciate it! I'd really like the upper cabinet lights to be on a dimmer switch and tomorrow is my last chance to tell the electrician what to do, if anything, regarding regular wiring.

Our drywall starts tomorrow, and our electricians just did the hardwire in 2 locations specified by the cabinet maker. The cabinet guys will fish the rest of the wires for UCL under an upper cabinet and shelf, and inside 1 cabinet. I verified with him, are they really sure that this does not need to be done before drywall, and he assured me that this is how they do it all the time. I asked my cabinet maker to put a flush channel and LEDs right into the bottom of the cabinet, so really all I will see is a strip of light, nothing sticking out. I hope yours works out and you get those lights!

All I know is that sometimes a transformer is put above the cabinetry if the cabinetry doesn't go all the way to the ceiling, and wires can be run for lighting all around inside the cabintry to different locations as needed. If you wanted those lights on a separate, dimmable switch, then obviously there is more work to be done. I hope your electrician comes through this time on your directives.

Unless you want dark spots, I would put under cabinet lights everywhere. If you have framed cabinets, there are some very thin LED lights that will allow you to run in a continuous line without cutting into the bottom frame.

acm: We will have "can lights" of a sort in the space, but as I said, they will be 11 feet up, and the ceiling is angled, so it will be wash lighting, not task lighting. We are specifically seeking light that will be able to be closer in and won't be able to be easily shadowed by heads, which is the benefit of under cabinet lights, ya know? jslazart, I was wondering about something like that coming off the side wall. Even thinking about something like this, this, which could be moved out of the way or directed as needed to where you are working, but wonder if it would look too busy: I have yet to see a kitchen quite like ours, but will see if I can grab a good angle of what I am working with in Google Sketch Up to show you what I am working with.
