    They have tails....

    or.....sonar....and wings.....

Truth be told there was a lot of noise coming from this little slot in the wood of my lower patio ceiling. Turned out to be 2 brown bats....having a discussion. So I've been researching "brown bats".

I think birds are more likely to mate for life than mammals!

    My next guess:

    They are noctural

(You can tell I really have no idea.)

    For skibby.....

Bats comprise 25% of our mammal population here on Earth. The way the question is worded....I don't think this is the answer...it's just what came to mind.

If bats are 25% and rodents are 50%, then the other 25% are the everything else.

I like bats, but I'm not fond of most rodents.

Lars.....I wasn't fond of these 2 bats. ☺ The guano left on my new paver patio for 1 bat was gross.....2 was waaaaaaaaaaay gross! ☺ And....they were really noisy! It's bat bickering noise. Not happy chatter. The 1 bat moved into another little slot in my patio ceiling to get away from the 2nd bats cussing him out. Since there was "no" room for 2, the 2nd bat left him alone....and bat #1 moved back home to his bigger slot. ☺

I've mostly seen bats from a distance, especially the Samoan flying foxes (I guess they are considered bats) we saw in Fiji. They stayed in the fruit trees when they weren't flying. I did see way more of those than any other mammal while we were there, but we were on a small island.

I think bats have an advantage over other mammals because they can fly, making it easier for them to spread and also to avoid predators. Also, many of them live in caves, safe from predators. I think only birds like hawks and owls eat them - at least owls would be able to see them at night.

I also saw a lot of bats in the ruins in Mexico, especially Mayan ruins, which are in the jungle. I had to be careful going into the rooms with low ceilings because there were usually bats hanging in there.
