Help! Tomato Leaf Curl! How & Why? What now? lol
Comments (12)Welcome to the wonderful world of growing tomatoes in containers. Here is what I've learned over the years. You water them too much, they wilt. Water too little, they wilt. Potting mix drains too quickly, they dry out too fast, they wilt. Potting mix retains too much water, their feet get soggy, they wilt. Fertilize too much, they wilt. Fertilize too little, they wilt. Give them a funny look, they wilt -- and then produce tomatoes with blossom end rot....See Morecucumber leaves starting to curl with yellowing and papery feel
Comments (8)Plants can be saved from molds if it doesn't progress too far. Molds only grow in damp stagnant air conditions. So you need to dry the soil and pot out substantially and cut way back on the watering. Most important improve the air circulation. Use a small fan to increase the air circulation all around them. You may lose those leaves but the new growth should be ok. Some also suggest lightly misting the undersides of the leaves with a 1:10 diluted of hydrogen peroxide in water. I have no personal experience with that. But bottom line, yes, cucumbers will always do better when direct seeded out doors at the proper time. As for the peat pots, if you keep using them then despite what the manufacturer says, be sure to strip them off the root ball prior to transplanting. Comments (7)Thanks for the reply DMForcier! As for the fertilizer, which I only fed once, I mixed 1.5 tblspoon's in the top soil and watered. I always water(hose) just to the point that there is little seepage from the bottom holes of the pot. So I water an Inch or so and wait and see if there is any seepage, if not, I water a bit more. Water frequency, I would say it is every 2-3 days. If I wait more, the top of the plant, both leaves and stems start leaning. Happens most of the days that the sun is out but the plant is always happy in the morning. From all the readings, my first guess was calcium deficiency but I am also taking precautions if just in case I was over-watering. I have moved it on the deck yesterday morning with plans to cut the sun light to 5 hrs so that I can check on if over-watering is an issue. If I leave it at the spot where it was always, I will definitely have to water it every 2-3 days because of the top wilting. The picture shows where it was and it is south facing. Hope I am making the right moves. Other than a stop in growth for one of my tomatoes(cherry variety for containers) touch-wood, all my other plants are so far happy....See MoreSweet Gum Tree Leaves Black at Edges
Comments (8)Yes, foliar chlorosis is almost always associated with one or more mineral nutrient deficiencies, often to iron and/or manganese. Sometimes nitrogen itself. The black leaf edges are a separate issue, most likely a bacterial or fungal leaf scorch syndrome. So, two different things going on with those leaves. OP, while your soil may be low in iron and/or manganese, it is at least just as likely that the actual genesis of the problem (of the chlorotic foliage) is a too-high soil pH. You can have that checked. So, if in fact, the soil pH is too high for the species, soil sulfur can be applied rather liberally around the root zone of the tree. In time, that will drive down the pH and the tree will be able to better access the nutrients it needs. However-and this is especially true in fine-textured soils (clay-based), in time, the pH will tend to drift right back to where it was via soil buffering capacity. Just something to be aware of-you can easily reapply the acidifying agent. +oM...See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
