The Great Wall of Jade's Kitty is Not Here Anymore
Comments (17)Oh Jeff, I'm so sorry. From your posts through the years, I know she was a sweety. Wow, 19 - that's a nice, long life for a kitty-cat. My Samantha had just turned 20 when I lost her in 2005. It was really devastating to have had a sweet companion like her for so long and to lose her. You kind of prepare yourself as they get that old, but it's still so hard... And I'm glad you mentioned the Rainbow Bridge... I read it now and then, when I'm feeling melancholy about the pets I've lost (you remember ol' Remo, who we lost in 2006, and so many others...) and it's really kind of reassuring... Isn't it wonderful to have the memories of our precious pets? Denise in Omaha...See MoreI think my kitty is fading....
Comments (33)Thanks so much for all your sympathetic replies, really, they help me so much and make so much sense. And a particular shout out to sylvia for being one of the few people who know what Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is like. I took my cat to the vet with a friend to be put down, but I emotionally couldn't do it so ended up boarding the cat with all the euthanasia papers signed. I am away for a week since my house is being termite tented, I finally got up the guts today to call them and tell them to put him down. I've been moping around all day and so sad. I wanted to be with him when they gave him the sedative but I'm just not strong enough, I would have whisked him off the table, I could not bring myself to watch. But it was the right decision, the vet (the third I spoke with who saw my cat) once again said he probably has lots of things wrong with him, he just hasn't been tested. For sure his kidneys are shutting down. So you guys on this site have been so understanding, it is very hard. All my other recent deaths have made me emotionally weak, I guess. I am far from peace with the decision but the vets convinced me that he would have 1-6 months to live. I'd rather do it now than watch him go further downhill or find his dead body. Also better for my dog who was very attached to him. So thank you from the bottom of my heart. Hollie...See MoreNeed advice re. stray kitty
Comments (43)The other thing that I would suggest is having your bully cat evaluated by your vet for hormone levels. It's rare, but occasionally a vet can miss some tissue during a neuter. That tissue isn't enough to make a boy cat be stinky boy tom cat, but it can be enough to produce enough testosterone to create aggression. And, I know it sounds insane to many people to give a cat Prozac, but it's about $13 a month for the medication and it can make a real difference in aggression levels. It can ease bully boy over his rough patch for 6-8 months and then be gradually weaned from it. Once you get some responses hardwired by repetition, the habit remains even when the medication is gone. The biggest downside to the medication is, well, medicating a cat. some are far worse than others. A human compounding pharmacy can create a flavored liquid out of a pill medication and that often works better than a pill if bully boy is a bad pill swallower. And I still have a nylon "cat sack" Hannibal Lecter straitjacket around here somewhere that I think you can still buy. I got mine at Fosters and Smith. That and a pill popper and you won't get bitten or scratched. But, it may make bully boy be an expert at camouflage and evasion tactics! My own bully boy, the now departed Onslow, underwent "chemical mood enhancement therapy" for a year before he'd leave my timid little girl cat alone. She screamed every time he headed her way, even though he never put a scratch on her. He just wanted to hold her down by the scruff of her neck and pretend he still had cojones. (That's where I learned about residual testicular tissue. Thankfully, he didn't have any and didn't need a second neutering.)...See MoreHow to help sad kitty?
Comments (45)I think we might wait until our 18 year old leaves us and then take the plunge and adopt another. I agree about a kitten being easier to integrate, but I would really love an older cat who is a certified lap sitter and very non-aggressive so there are no clashes with our alpha male and 2 alpha females. Of course, you never know if and when a needy one will show up, in that case all bets are probably off. Something strange to report, we had our kitty cremated. They also included a pottery disk with his paw print and name. As soon as we brought everything home, sad guy thoroughly examined the container and the disk and ran off to start playing with his toys?? This was last night and he is acting a lot happier. I don't understand it, could there be a lingering scent of his buddy he was able to detect? It was like his friend was home again and that made him feel better. Or maybe it was just a fluke and he was starting to feel better anyway?...See Moresas95
