Any Reason to NOT Use the Strongest Concentration Rooting Powder?

Rooting powder comes in different concentrations. Hormex makes a #1, #3, #8, and #16, with #16 being the highest concentration around 1.6%. Some online propagators of hard-to-root plants like Protea say that Hormex #16 is the only concentration that they have seen work. This got me to thinking. Is there ever a reason with any plant to not use the highest concentration hormone you can find? They cost about the same amount, so why not just always use the highest concentration?

I have read on the Internet that too high a concentration may actually inhibit root formation. I have not had the personal experience to corroborate that.

ohms, I've had great success - though it was with seedling quince (C.oblonga) - just sticking dormant cuttings in the ground - no rooting hormone or anything. Don't know if 'mature' wood from grafted selections will root as easily.

Hello Hosta specialists, I live close to London Ontaio Canada (zone 5) I purchased three HOSTA APHRODITE (PLANTAGINEA) from a very reputable garden center three years ago. They are planted on the east side of our home in moist loamy clay soil and 6 inches of mulch. They receive the full amount of sun exposure only being shaded by our home from mid day till evening. This variety of hosta are the last hosta to emerge in spring. (I have about 30 varieties) Here's the problem... they send up beautiful shoots with flower buds, but the buds never open! The unopened buds look like they're ready to open to a full and fantastic bloom but they just end up looking like that until they turn brown and wilt. Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong?? Thanks, Fran

Paw Paws aren't the easiest thing to start from bareroot. And, I hope they don't freeze beyond their survival temperature in transit. What I would do in your situation is pot each one in good potting media and keep it in a cold place just above freezing for the duration of the winter. I actually did this last year with a replacement bare root pecan that Stark's chose to ship to me in early November. I knew it would never survive a Michigan winter outside, so in the garage it went -- temps were between 40 and 45 all winter. It stayed dormant until April when I could move it to the greenhouse, and it actually did really well last summer. Good luck.

Hi TGA If you put either hormoden #3 or seradix #3 in google it gives the exact formula. #3 is the strongest of the rooting powders and I can only get#1[or grade 1] which is not strong enough for Acers As far as I can gather #3 has 0.8%Indole-3 butyric acid some form of funguside and talc as the carrier. It is commonly available in the States for from $16 for 8 ozs. Why do you ask? have you a source of supply or are you a chemist? Regards Len
