Tub/shower combo or tub and shower stall
Comments (15)I know I probably went overboard, but I have been searching Houzz for shower/tub combos for myself if I decide to go in that direction. Most of these pictures have Master Bath titles - they tend to be small houses or apartments in large cities where space is an issue. They all have a generous sized tub. A few have extra shower bling and even a separate tub filler. All of them have material choices and the level of tile work that you see in a master bathroom. I'm sure that if I searched Houzz I could find just as many, or even more, remodels of small master baths where they have just built a walk in shower. I think the decision to do a shower/tub may be a personal choice because they want a soaking tub - since they are titled Master I'm assuming the bath is not the only bath in the house and they could easily just go with a shower. Comments (7)Those are really common sense answers that don't really address the actual question... Obviously getting a nice one piece surround would be ideal, or having the entire walls demo'd out and done with fresh tile and proper waterproofing, etc. But can't there be a possibility of a good product to use? Yes absolutely, but what are they is the question. Unfortunately, I don't have a great answer for you either, but I'm looking into it. I'm trying to find something that can go right over the tile too though, for you, just a paint / epoxy might work fine. I want something that can also be flexible enough to span cracks, but your application just going over regular walls down to the tile may not need that exactly. I haven't tried the Zinsser watertite clear but I've been looking into it, which is how I came across this, hoping to find some clues for my own. They have a clear that might work just fine for you, not sure if you used like the white for example and didn't know there was a clear. You would think someone would have a decently abrasion resistant, clear, semi-flexible coating that goes on like paint for tiled showers to seal them and make a million bucks, I'm honestly quite surprised it doesn't seem to specifically exist. For your application just about any marine clear epoxy might work too, followed by a good uv coating since you probably don't have to worry as much about cracks as I do. FlexEase was one I found that looked good. *I realize this is an old question but thought there is a possibility you might still be looking for something, or if you found a good solution, please let me know what your experience was with it....See MoreWaterproof Cushion for Bath Tub?
Comments (21)KathyG -- Before you lose the only bathtub in a house, ask a local realtor about it. You can't bathe a two-year-old in the sink. Maybe a laundry tub for one of those -- or a dog? DH and I *primarily* use the MBA shower stall, but I love my Bain Ultra air-jet tub. I never use the Kohler whirlpool that I insisted on saving from our teardown, except to keep its jets working. Its day may come, as air jets are 'nice', but water jets are theraputic. I might use it more if it didn't take SO much water. Eandhl2 -- I'll have to re-check Amazon. I didn't see anything fit to be immersed. I'm back to the kiddie ring or a trip to BB&B to look at the two suggested by Rob and Raven. I'm still surprised a *seat* cushion isn't marketed, given the Senior population; it could be used on a shower bench or chair as well as in a bathtub. Thanks, all!...See MoreWaterproofing under preformed shower base and tub?
Comments (0)I am remodeling our bathrooms. Both currently have 1 piece tub/shower units. They will be ripped out and in one bathroom a walk in shower and the other a new one piece tub with tiled walls. The bathrooms will be down to the studs in the shower/tub area. Also, I will be putting down tile over backer board on the floor. The bath with just the shower will also have an in-floor heating mat. The other bath has under-floor radiant heat. I will be using a decoupling membrane under the tile as well. Here are the questions I have: Should I continue the backerboard under the preformed shower and tub? Should I waterproof under the tub? Is mineral wool a good insulation to use behind the walls or is rigid foam a better choice? (for sound mitigation) I plan on using spray foam (Good Stuff) around the stud perimeter to seal any gaps before putting any insulation in. (The shower has an exterior sidewall, and the back wall abuts the garage. Is Kerdi board (or similar) the best to use for waterproofing the walls or is backer board (Hardi, Durock or similar) with either Kerdi or Redguard to waterproof with. And, yes, I will be doing the work myself. I know some will tell me that I should hire a professional to do the work. I have done a lot of tile work in the past, including tub and wall surrounds. I am just asking for updated info and any tips or tricks that others may have. (It has been 10 years since I did my last major bathroom remodel. Thanks for your time and any help you can provide....See Morekindertina
