Educate me: How to maintain exterior of our 1920's tudor?
Comments (3)I have a 1920s wood and stone house. I call a painter and a stone mason when work is needed. Why not call them, along with a stucco person, to evaluate? I owned a stucco house in the past, had it redashed, then didn't touch it for 18 years. Stucco is really easy maintenance. A good paint job should last 10 years. Stone work may be tuckpointing or the like and should last a good while. Anyway, get some free evaluations/estimates and you'll know where you are....See MoreSad not to build, but excited about our 1920s Tudor
Comments (20)Thank you all for such warm comments. They really made my night. I am so eager to close (not ‘til May 22nd) and get moved in. Here are a few photos, since you asked! The sunroom, which will almost certainly quickly become my favorite place to be. It’s to the right of the plaid chairs in the photo above. The breakfast nook, which currently houses the stove top, but that will be moved back into the actual kitchen once we renovate. I want to put a small table here for my morning tea. And finally, our daughter’s room. It’s by far the prettiest bedroom in the place (wallpaper and big floral curtains to be replaced). The master bedroom is a bit strange in that it has a short set of stairs leading down to an office that was added on over the garage. It actually works perfectly for me, as I work from home. I’m a bit sad that the house doesn’t have any of the super beautiful windows that Tudors often have and that most in the neighborhood have, but the facts were that this particular house and layout fit our family the best. Now that I know how to post photos, I’ll definitely put some of the kitchen photos in the kitchen forum to get feedback on layout. I can’t believe what a great resource this site can be. Thanks again for your kindness!...See MoreRemodeling kitchen in 1920s Tudor-style home
Comments (55)Ha, Becky...you are not wrong. At this point I think that I’d rather have multiple root canals while touring colleges than ever, EVER do another kitchen renovation. I should have known from reading the posts here that it wouldn’t be smooth sailing, but I’ve been surprised by how much I’ve disliked the process. Mostly due to our own poor planning but also some unforeseen complications, we’ve had to have the plumber and electrician out countless times over the past week. The appliances were installed today, but because of the position of the gas line, the slide in range sticks out an inch beyond what is called for/looks reasonable. The only solution would be to have our cabinet installer come back out to re-set the two small base cabinets on either side of the range, but he is booked out til infinity and I can’t even imagine how bummed our cabinet designer is going to be when we reach out with this request (she’s gone so far above and beyond for us on this project that I feel dreadful even asking). We obviously can’t have the counters templated until we deal with this situation, so we’ll have plywood counters for eternity. My husband decided that they needed to be more water resistant so he bought fake marble contact paper to add to the plywood and at least that is making me LOL. I’m just kind of down in the dumps and questioning my choices again (this time appliances). I have to head out of town on Thursday for work and honestly I think that it will be good for me to have a bit of space from this. I intend to take some stellar naps when I’m not at the conference....See MoreImprove curb appeal for 1920s Tudor
Comments (16)Put some lattice on the full height of the chimney and add some climbing roses or bouganvillea. Would be really beautiful! You could even put two small pergola-like projections above the windows on either side and train them to go both up and to the sides. Something like this:...See MoreGregory
