If you could see the future of design, would you like it?
Comments (16)I will probably have more to say on this later, but briefly: right now I feel that when it comes to interior design we are in a stasis, and it will be so until there is a new technology that is applicable to furniture design and construction. The last cognitive leap, so to speak, in furniture design was in the mid-century period, when new technologies allowed designers to create wholly new designs--e.g. the Eameses and George Nelson and others who applied steam formed plywood splint technology and plastic embedded fiberglass (from aeronautical sources?) to create now Iconic plywood and fiberglass chairs, etc. Expanded foam technologies lead to the gigantic foam furniture, such as the Ligne Roset Togo. And then people got experimental with blow-up furniture and bean bags. AND --this is key-- they were all processes that allowed Inexpensive Mass Production. The next major furniture movements, the Post-Modernist and Memphis Movements (see "Ruthless People") were cartoonish riffs on existing styles...a sure sign that there was nothing essentially new. Crooked shelves, slanted tables, and chairs made out of glass are interesting expressions, but they don't really add much to the vocabulary of good approachable pieces. There are some high tech applications and materials used to make furniture currently (Graphite Fibers and such) but they are expensive and not accessible for mass production. So, while we are surrounded by technological advances in the "envelope" of our houses (mostly artificial intelligence stuff), I think the interiors are going to be reiterations of what has come before, until an innovative material comes along....See MoreConversation vs. Discussion Poll
Comments (25)I have been following all of these discussions and just want to say that I am guilty of not reading everything in the FAQ's and policies, because I assumed (and you know what they say about assuming) they were general policies like most boards (be nice, no sleaze, etc., etc.). So as a newbie, I completely apologize if I should have asked questions over here on this side instead of the other side, but I think all my questions were on topic, therefore, on the correct side (the other side). I am okay with the off topic stuff over here and project related on other side. It makes it easier to sort through what posts I really want to check out and learn from. If you don't mind me adding one more thing, the conversations/discussions links are not very noticeable, could they be enlarged so that they are more prominent and visible? I'm not blind or anything, but I didn't notice the links for quite awhile because they just blend into the page. Thanks for having a wonderful forum where I can learn and be inspired. I appreciate all of your work and knowledge--A LOT!!...See MoreI would like to discuss two plants with you
Comments (16)Avedon, I was reading part of Landscaping with daylilies and he said that dormants evergreens and semi evergreens will do according to a specific place and no general rule applies. He claimed, and your Git 'R Done and many I have show that to at least be partly true. It just seems to me that when one doesn't do well after moving to another location, it is time to let someone else see what it does for them. This three blooms is the most it ever had at once, and it never had over a half dozen or so for e in a season...too hot I suspect. Some of Woodhenge do great, and others don't here. Odd. kay...See MoreComment order in threads, a new iteration?
Comments (14)On my phone, I can choose the order and it stays on that setting. On my home computer (MacBook) I can’t choose and, even tho I use the same bookmark and browser every time, the order is usually newest to oldest but often switches back to oldest to newest. I did add this to the poll started by Emily on the other side. I also voiced my objections to the best answer feature....See Moretedbixby
