Cat trading?
Comments (14)Paul, Thanks for the info, and I think that what you're doing is great. Anyone who rescues cats and gives them a home is more than okay in my book! :) Susan, I guess I just might have to make a trip to the nursery sometime (of course it's too cold here yet for them to have plants out already) and see what treasures I can find on their plants. I don't mind buying a few parsley plants because I think they're only a couple dollars. Ha, I can just picture me walking out with 2 plants and 1000 cats on them! ;-) You know I'll have the plants for them, that's for sure, so if I find any cats anywhere, they're coming home with me. I'd love to give them a home here and any other cat that I have food for. I'd love to have at least a dozen different cats here at our place, but some will just have to wait until the plants get bigger. I wonder if a butterfly instinctly knows if there's enough food or not? For instance, say I'd plant a Paw Paw tree from a seed and it would only get to be 6 or 12 inches (not very big the first year. I would assume that that wouldn't be enough to even feed one ZST cat. I know that but does the butterfly know that?! I'd be frantic if I would get cats and not have enough here to feed them. I couldn't just let them die! Someone here mention that it's illegal to sent butterflies across state lines without a permit. So does mean that if I couldn't find a butterfly lover in my area who has Paw Paw trees and is willing to take the cats, I'd have to let them die?! Nobody in my area sells Paw Paw trees....See MoreButterfly & Garden Pictures
Comments (13)Yes, yes, yes - we finally got rain! Yesterday, Mama Monarch was still hanging out, but she has layed very few eggs. What up, Mama? Also...........drum roll, please..........I had my FIRST CLOUDLESS SULPHUR! A big, beautiful female! I hoped she would lay eggs on the Xmas Cassia, but no. It was enuff to just see her! I also had a White-Lined Sphinx nectaring all over the yard. What a beauty! She particularly loved Pyramid Bush, Melochia tomentosa. I love, love, love, this small southern Texas and southern Florida native. I hope I can collect some seeds. It is hardy to zone 8a, and grows from a tap root. Maybe I'll get lucky and it will winter over????? Anyway, the little butterflies, bees, and now the Sphinx Moth, love it - who wouldn't? - it's in the CHOCOLATE family for Pete's sake. Nothing bothers it, it is drought tolerant even at an early stage when most plants need water to become established. As one person put it (on another forum), it contributes to wildlife cover, soil stability, and bio-diversity. This a must have plant for me. It starts blooming when temps get hot - 90s - and never stops. It should do well in a wildscape garden as well. Sorry to be so long-winded, but some of us are always on the look-out for new plants in the garden. Anyway, things are looking up here in Oklahoma for our wildlife! I have tons of finches right now on the Sunflowers - both House and Gold. The hummers are in love with the Salvia darcyi. It has the BIGGEST blooms on a Salvia that I have ever seen, and bright, billiant red. It is hardy to zone 7. Susan...See MoreLooks Like we Have Another Cat!
Comments (40)Carol...thank you for your comment. Sadly I have to say that there are worse situations here sometimes when people want to go away on summer holiday. There are cases where old people have also been abandoned. Grandpas and grandmas with Alzheimers have been discovered sitting on a park bench with a sports bag full of clothing, left to whomever might find and look after them. Of course that makes the national news. I don't know how often that happens here in the islands but it has been seen on mainland Spain. However the quantity of dogs and cats abandoned at summer vacation time here is shocking. The animal refuges are already full of abandoned animals and at this time they are desperate for both space and money to feed them. It is nearly always the foreign residents who take it upon themselves to volunteer to work, clean cages, raise money through raffles and entertainment gigs in bars etc. to try and keep these refuges afloat. Often the local authorities turn a blind eye and don't help when it comes to looking after lost and abandoned animals. The Germans are very helpful and have a rescue system for abandoned dogs and after caring for them here and getting them back in shape, they fly them to new homes in Germany. It costs just over $30 per dog to fly them to Germany. But my British friends and acquaintances are always doing something to help, whether it be bringing in books and old clothes to sell at raffles, or as in the case of my friend Lynne, spending every Saturday morning for years washing blankets and cleaning potty trays at a local cat refuge. I do have to admire these folks for being so selfless. My small contribution is in taking in any stray or feral who wanders into our garden. Always room for one more at our house! :-) SharonCb...See MoreIs cats eating roses a thing? Or are mine just weird?
Comments (13)It really does look like that cat is eating roses. :) At least it's in a dainty manner and not making a big mess! (The cat-nibbled gladiolas were growing outside, not cut flowers. As far as I could tell, we didn't have roof rats indoors.) My mom's dog used to stand in the middle of my dad's very precious cherry tomato patch and graze. A fence magically appeared. That dog also ate oranges and tangerines if you peeled them for him....See Morecaflowerluver
