Please help! Need to locate water hammer in pipes
Comments (2)jjam, Auto parts stores sell something that looks like a stethascope with a tube on the end for listening. There should be an access panel for the shower piping if there is a closet on the other side of the wall. Sounds like the piping was not installed/anchored properly. If you can see piping in the basement, try to slightly bang on the piping to see if you can recreate the noise. Shock absorbers or water hammer arrestors work best when placed between the last two fixtures on the longest run of piping. Air chambers were typically placed on the incoming main water supply line, but become water logged and require draining to introduce air so they work again. If the holes that were drilled for the water lines are larger than the piping, you can put a small piece of pipe insulation into the gap to avoid the banging. The big box stores also sell "J hooks" for supporting piping runs. Hope that helps, Dan Martyn...See MoreAny temporary fixes for clogged(?) vent pipe? Help!
Comments (3)I know you are bothered mostly by the smell, but a completely plugged vent is even more serious because it could force methane and other sewer gases into the house. This could make someone very sick. Are you in an area that is having snow and ice that may clog the vent? If so, you need to get someone up there right away and open it up. Plumbing vents are designed to just let air rise naturally and pull out the odors, there is typically no easy way to force them to vent without going up to the roof and removing any obstructions. Comments (7)I am not a fan of wire shelving int he closet - especially the kind you have, where you can't slide hangers from one side to the other. as long as you are replacing, I would install separate rods, with shelves as needed. Having 2 rods in the left-hand side seems to make sense - it looks like you have more need for short hanging than long (dresses). Perhaps you could move the rods down a bit, so you can use the shelf up above - looks like your suitcase could fit up there, if you had a little more room. On the right side, perhaps put a rod for long hanging along the back wall, if 21" is enough. Position the rod to maximize shelving above or below - whichever you find more useful. In my DH's closet, I put his clothes rod as high as I can reach, with shelves below - it's very efficient use of space. On the right wall, you can install shelves 36" wide - that should give you room to easily access the hanging clothes. I would use boxes or something to determine how much access space is needed, so you can have shelves as wide and deep as possible. When installing shelves, make sure you put in enough shelves so you don't have to stack a lot of things. I have shelves that are just far enough apart for shoes; others are spaced far enough apart to stack a few pairs of jeans or sweaters. Have fun with your project, and be sure to come back with "after" photos!...See Morehelp configuring laundry closet
Comments (2)Please show photos of the rest of the room. While you are thinking about changes, you could consider a clothes rod as @annk says, and see if a card table would fit temporarily between the washer and dryer. Many people simply fold clothes as they take them out of the dryer, putting them on top of the dryer before carrying them out. The window has a lovely view. It'll be a pleasant place to do laundry.
