A first step would be to determine the value of the phone. Go to swappa.com and you can find out how much it is worth. There are at least a dozen places on the internet that specialize in buying phones. If you have the energy, you could check several and decide which gives the best deal.

Do that before contacting Verizon to see if they will take it back.

Hey gang, just selling it may or may not be the right approach. It may be subject to 2 years of monthly payments. It may be on a contract or have another obligation. Maybe Verizon will take it back. Who knows? Yes, Verizon knows.

Definitely contact Verizon! You may be charged for the phone in full if you are closing his account and not returning the phone.

Should you decide to sell it be extremely careful and only meet the buyer inside a police station. They have areas for that. Here there have been many shooting in phone transactions. The police have made pleas on the news to please not make any sales with out doing it in a police station. Not worth dying over.

I think Verizon would be the best place to go first.

The easiest way to sell the phone is to go to Facebook, type in a yard sale and the name of your town, then list it. It will be gone in no time and to someone nearby. Take 30% off the original price.

If Verizon doesn't help and make this right for you, even though you say you are not a Facebook user, surely one of your friends or family is. If that's the best way to sell it (craigslist can feel too risky to me, unless you have someone who can go with you and meet in a safe public place - same with Facebook), you can ask someone to list it on Facebook and screen the replies for you; get people's phone numbers to call them back and make arrangements to meet. Don't offer to send/mail it to anyone. Cash and in person at someplace like the fire dept or police department.

I do think Verizon will work with you on what is essentially a new phone, still a new release model and under the circumstances. If not, is there a family member or friend who could help you find it a new home? I would likely donate it to our Interfaith or Women's Center before I'd want to sell it to a stranger, but that's my aversion. I'm sure you will find the right solution.

I know nothing about Apple products but have bought used phones online through Amazon and ebay however I can't imagine you want to deal with getting that set up. Do you happen to know anyone who regularly sells on either platform and who could handle the transaction for you?

If you're making payments on the phone, ask them if you can return the phone and cancel the contract. . They may not do that, but it never hurts to ask.

If you bought the phone, Please don't donate it Goodwill or any other charity. Sell the phone and donate all or part of the money.

You know that I think of you and mourn your DH's untimely death. I really thought we would be exchanging news of MM treatments and outcomes for years. It is terribly sad that there was nothing more to try...no new breakthrough that could give him more *good* years with you.

Not knowing much about smart phones, my first reaction was to contact Verizon and explain your circumstance. Surely, they must have some provisions for situations like yours. My sincerest condolences on the loss of your husband. Please stay in contact. There are so many kind people here who have been through what you're going through now with great wisdom and compassion and there are those of us who have not, but might just offer up the right anecdote at the right time to help you through the dark moments.

As to the phone, if it is newer than your own, you can just have them change the number to yours. Talk to someone at Verizon or at the Apple store to have it reconfigured.

Thank you for all the words of kindness and advise. I appreciate every post. He passed 3 weeks ago today here at home and I’m still trying to acclimate to my new normal. He and I were two peas in a pod, always together. When we weren’t together, all we could think about was getting home so we could be. My saving grace has been that the dog snores like he did which makes nights a little more bearable.

Outside of my daughter and son in law, my family is out of state so I’m handling all of “IT’ on my own, the phone is an easier issue, some of it is just plain tedious. And I’m starting to realize that I definitely returned to work too soon.

I’ll call Verizon, I have the death certificate handy, I put the phone on a payment plan to make it easy but paying that out isn’t a problem. Normally, charity would be my first choice, but I just paid 400.00 for it 8 weeks ago and I can’t afford to give 400.00 away.

When my friend's dad died, he had just purchased a new iPhone XR from the AT&T store. AT&T cancelled the contract with no penalty, when they saw the death certificate, and waived the remaining payments/contract on the phone. So my friend gave the phone to her daughter, who needed a new phone badly but couldn't afford it at the time.

Very sorry for your loss. When my husband died I called Verizon and had the service to his phone turned off. No penalty for ending the contract early, I assume because of his death. I gave the actual phone to my son who needed a new one. He took it to Verizon and had it changed to his account.

Well, I took the sound advise to call Verizon and while I admit I was a wee bit skeptical, I was wonderfully surprised by their kindness and how easy they tried to make the process for me. They’ve turned the phone off and are sending me a box to return it in. One more page of the chapter turned. :c(
