Thanks, guys! That's encouraging. Ricky, the orange jasmine I have is the Lakeview. It's awful looking, both the shrub one and the standard I had in a pot. Not a living leaf on it, but I'm hanging in there, hoping it will pull through. I love the scent of those blooms. Mike, my gold mound durantas got hit last year, too, and were black, but came back without pruning. Funny, this year, the plants are completely black, except for the tips, which already have bright green leaves coming out. So I'm thinking they'll be okay, if we don't get hit again. Mary, I had temps around 25 & 26 degrees for five of the eight nights that we had hard freezes. And the temps stayed in the mid-20's for HOURS. I hope you didn't have much worse than that. I'm very happy to hear that your night-blooming jasmine came back strong. Did you have to cut it back? I'm dreading that. Mine was 5' x 3', and I hate having to start over. But I guess it grows fast, because it went from a small cutting to that size in one year. No, I won't be pruning until after March 1, but I'm trying to get a sense of what might pull through and what won't. Thanks again for the input! Marcia

randyland: prune close to a joint where the leaves attach. Prune to your own taste to create a plant that is attractive to you. Each cut will produce two branches where there was one, so pruning will "thicken" the plant. Just don't cut far back into the old (hard, light brown, thick) wood. Cestrum blooms on new growth, so your pruning will create new flowers eventually. A good rule of thumb is to cut no more than 1/3 at one time. woodcrafters: cestrum blooms on new wood, so the "growing" will get you some flowers in short order. cestrum need the hot summers and especially hot summer nights to bloom, and a young plant takes a little time to get its feet established. Since you've had a few flowers, I'd say you can expect more any day. They love water and fertilizer. You could try some "bloom booster"-- a fertilizer formulation with a high middle number, eg 10-30-10.

How big is your pot? They really like large pots and roots outgrow a small one quickly outdoors. That could be the reason for yellow leaves. Also if the pot is drying out too quickly or not able to dry out all between waterings (too wet=could cause root rot) it could get yellow foilage. Walmart has huge round laundry tubs with the rope handles(by the laundry baskets) for about 5 dollars. You can drill a bunch of holes in the bottom with a *Large* drill bit fill with potting soil mixed with sand and perlite to promote good drainage. I usually fertilize mine with miracle grow every few months. Whatever you do, do not cut off any new growth now because they will bloom on that new growth. Later, you can take them out of the pot and root prune them- and repot back into the smaller pot for winter storage, just do it awhile before moving back inside so it can adjust gradually,You can also prune the growth back AFTER if is done blooming - they are pretty tough. Or you can get some of the little white seeds when it blooms to plant or take cuttings.
