Need small (dwarf) specimen tree recommendations, please.
Comments (3)The more dwarf JMs don't have really wide-spreading root systems, but they usually don't like full sun, so probably would struggle. I agree with Laceyvail - in this instance, a taller, narrow tree would be my choice. Heptacodium would be a good choice, as would serviceberry. Redbud is another possibility, but might be too wide, as they do spread. Look in a copy of Sunset Magazine Gardening Book for small trees - there should be a list toward the front or in the back. You should be able to get mature sizes and preferred exposures of the various trees from the listings....See MoreCan anyone ID these Euphorbia specimens?
Comments (6)I see this type of Euphorbia during winter in the city of Vancouver. This one is located near the Victoria Inner Harbour in James Bay. I saw several other kinds this week. I talked to local gardeners removing stuff for winter or putting in winter plants. Two were from Ontario like myself. We find it amazing what little we knew as easterners about BC. I took geography in Ontario and Canadian flora was included. The course had obviously way too little content on BC. It was so generalized that it is actually sad to find how as easterners we were obsolutely ignorant about the BC coast and its potential. My gf is stunned seeing winter veggies. Some newbies are very surprised but are not complaining. Keep on gardening... Cheers Here is a link that might be useful: Winter Euphorbia...See MoreNeed specimen shrub/tree recommendation
Comments (7)How about a hydrangea paniculata standard? That would compliment the hydrangea bushes you already have. Are you sure you want to plant anything in that spot with snow piling on in winter? You might have the same problem with snow breaking branches on any small bush/tree. Perhaps move tree/bush to other side? For other seasons' height you could put an obelisk there and plant a couple of type 3 clematis. Some viticellas bloom all summer/fall ie 'Madame Julia de Correvon'. 'Betty Corning' has smaller flowers with a light fragrance (rare for clematis). I cut my type 3 clematis back to the ground after foliage dies back from frost. The obelisk could be kept in place for winter sculpture or removed and replaced in the spring. Or, you could place a large ceramic container there which matches your shutter color and swap out plants for spring/summer/fall/ winter interest. Or a grouping of several pots in different sizes. Knowing what is growing in the raised bed would be helpful....See MorePlease ID this interesting cactus
Comments (5)Omar is spot on - it's this http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/62939/#b also known as Shin Daggar which alludes to the fact it's dangerous to shins if the shin owner is not paying attention. I would love to propagate this, with gloves, of course. Sadly it does die after it blooms. Dave's garden website doesn't indicate that it grows close to Fort Worth but I attest that it does. At the risk of sounding not too bright, we live at the base of an old Indian mountain...Comanches and Apaches lived on and around our land. The romanticist and legend writer in me wonders if I could spin the presence of this plant into their history in our area. Thank you Omar for the ID....See Morecactusmcharris, interior BC Z4/5
