I would leave them natural.

What is your decorating style?

We purchased a very similar house - dark green weathered tile floors and backsplash, light oak trim, oak trim cabs, oak trimmed counters. Ours had burgundy paint all over as well so at least you don't have that issue.

The green tile floor would bother me the most. I would take that out and put in slate before I moved in.

Your oak is a nice color, it doesn't seem to have that unattractive orange tone. I would leave the doors alone, probably paint that one odd strip of oak trim on the lower level the same color as the wall.

Another vote to leave the doors as they are. What a beautiful lake house! Just guessing that it may be in a wooded area, so for me, the green tile in the entry is fine, given what may be your surroundings.

Thanks for the response. Was looking to decorate as a lake cottage as the house sits on a lake and has great views of the lake. (See pic). House has 5 sliding doors facing the lake. Was thinking of a light blue color for the walls with white trim but not sure if the cool blue color would contrast too much with the warm golden oak floors.

The house is in the mountains an on a lake. Here is the exterior view. And the kitchen and gas stove in the living space are green so thought of using it as an accent color.

Just FYI. The pics are from the current owner. We have not moved in yet. Trying to decided items to update before moving in.

I assume these are the realty pictures . First off change all those pot light bulbs to LEDs in 4000K the space will look very different without the yellow glow . I am not a huge wood lover but it seems to be a very nice space . I would hold off until you have moved in to make any decisions . It looks like laminate counter so no big deal there . From what I see the major issue will be the kitchen so wait a bit and figure out how the whole functions for you before making any choices.

I have seen 90s houses where the copious wood trim bothers me, but this is not one of them. The listing photography may get some credit, but the space looks lovely. I don't have any issues with the wood floors, trim, or doors. I don't really care for the bar set-up, either in concept or design (I really dislike the style of the cabinets), but that's the only wood that really bothers me.

Blue and orange are complementary colors, so blue walls are going to just make the oranges of the wood look oranger. That doesn't sound like the direction you want to go. My favorite paint colors with orange oak are greens (the previous owner did this nicely with the furniture and counters) and whites. In the 90s you saw a lot of beige paired with the oak. Besides being a dated look now (if that is a concern for you), a lot of people ended up with a hodge-podge of neutrals that didn't quite all work together, so it's not as easy a look to pull of as it may sound.

Orange you glad you bought that house? Sorry, couldn’t resist. Pick wall colors last. You can go to Home Depot or any big box store and buy a few small 2’x3’ patterned door mats or rugs, bring them home, and lay them on the floor to see how they look wrt colors. Just remember to return them before the credit card is due. You’ll get a really good feel for what looks good with that color floor in your light.

You aren’t actually going to keep the rugs, just use them for color inspiration.

Thanks great suggestions on getting rugs to help with colors. We actually have lots of rugs already that we could try in the space. Pic from my last two apartments in the city. Those wall colors were easier.

It isn't all that bad. I would move my stuff in and live in it for a year. See how your rugs/furniture work there. Find out if the kitchen functions well or not. The previous owners have crowded it up a lot, so remember that less is more. Even if it is a larger house that you're used to, think in terms of downsizing all your stuff. Accumulating happens when your back is turned, but every move is a chance to make necessary corrections and deletions.

I'm the one who had suggested painting the doors, but now that I see more of your house, they don't look so bad! I'd still suggest painting some things though: the trim directly above the TV (but not the railing above that). and the window trim.

keep all the other wood. your house has some 90s details, but overall it has nice clean lines and a lot of potential!

what kind of decor are you into? because of all these angles and clean lines, I could see this house working well with a more modern look. If you prefer an older style, it's going to take a lot to get that to work.

I like these three rugs for your floors - the runner next to the kitchen island, the bedroom rug, and the rug next to the fireplace. I think the greens and blues might work. I am not sure how the rugs with reds in them will look. You’ll have to lay them out and see. Save you a trip to the store.
