You want cooling? then build a covered patio or pergola. bonus-it will keep the inside cooler too.

or, shade sails will help in a pinch, but the covered patio is better.

and see about planting a tree in the corner that will grow and give your house some shade.

Black absorbs the radiant and turns that into a 160 radiator.

No black on outside of house! Ye-god no. Beth’s suggestion on pergola would work well. Design it for the light direction you want to block.

We were thinking a pergola but if you put it just over the patio then you’re looking at the top of it when you stand on the deck. Unless we did like a 20 foot high pergola.

I’ve seen some cute courtyards with black paint :) Will it really not help at all with the blinding sun off the white brick? Ugh this is tough

black absorbs heat. I don't know what your insulation is like, but if that side gets all day sun, adding black paint to it will bake the interior. And standing next to that black will feel like the inside of an oven. So while the reflection may be gone, the radiant heat emanating off of the brick will be worse.

Do you have a completed picture that shows the finished deck? what do you mean you'll be looking down at it?

I've got two covered patios off of my back doors. They're great. they cut down the sun, and the heat and keep the house cooler. yes, when you look up you see the wood. I don't understand the issue w/that?

this is a patio cover we did on our rental property. the master has a walk out deck. we did the patio cover over the sliding door off the main room

What deck that you would see the top of the pergola? You need to create shade that is how you control this not by a black wall that will absorb and bounce back at you even more. Post pics of this new deck. Plant some shade trees. You think the desert will be less hot if it was black? Or get huge umbrellas and aim them to block the sun. Really yes your idea is crazy just to clarify.

So, advice from a gardener....black pots absorb enough heat to damage roots in sunny locations, warm climates. Thankfully I'm on the Washington coast where its not so much an issue.

Do not paint the sunny exterior wall of your house black! I get it on the blinding reflection, my sis in law bought glossy metal patio furniture and outdoor lunch table. Being seated there mid day hurt our eyes....

But you need another solution like mentioned above. Awning, pergola, some type of shade producing structure or landscaping. Your paint idea isn't going to work, and I'm not sure it wouldn't look pretty horrific while not working ;0)

Yeah, I’d say whatever rooms are on the interior of that black brick wall are going to be 20 degrees warmer than they are now. And they won’t cool off at night cause the bricks hold heat.

How about a small tree to provide shade? I have a mature Sargent Crabapple that is about 20 high and the canopy is just about as wide.

Painting the whole house sage green would be my choice. Check Romabio; high performance paint for masonry. None of the trees you've planted are going to provide shade and that's a mistake. Putting a pergola on a grassy area and installing some water features can cool it off.

I would consider adding wall-mounted pergolas or trellises to the back of your home over the windows and have a vine like clematis or wisteria add color and contrast to your home. The vine does not have suckers that attach to the brick. It will need a structure to hang from.

Trellises as suggested above are a great idea; The trees you have planted are not shade trees. Consult at your local gardening center for small, deciduous trees that will do well in your climate and use them near the house for shade and cooling and some privacy.

Go stand in the middle of an asphalt parking lot and tell me how comfortable it is. That’s what the side of your brick house will feel like.
