Red oak stain colors for floors with pet stains

I'm going to be staining my red oak floors this summer. Right now they're a natural color and they have several pet stains on them. I considered replacing those areas with new wood, but realized that, since I still have pets, I'll get stains again and it doesn't make sense to go to that trouble.

I've seen ebony and jacobean recommended for pet stained floors. I was hoping to do more of a gray-ish color that isn't quite that dark. Has anyone found a gray-ish color for red oak that would allow pet stains to somewhat blend in with the floor? Doesn't have to be perfect, but enough not to scream "PET STAIN"

I prefer a mid tone brown (cool in tone = same effect as gray) like Early American or Walnut. The walnut has a green base which means it will kill the red in the red oak.

Going gray is a tricky business. We've seen gray (imagine a watery paint sloshed all over the floor) make pet stains (any liquid stains actually) look WORSE. And that's the last thing you want to see.

"Can one stain 'New' Red Oak to match 'Old' Red Oak?" This is tuff to do. When we do a repair in an old Vancouver Home I often use some Shellac first and then top coat with Polyurethane. The shellac gives me the aged look or yellowing and the two seam to work well together. Some times we tint the top coat a little. Judgement calls since sunlight and time will yellow the top coat so making it look right now might make it look wrong in a year.....

I am having my old red oak and some newly installed red oak floors stained Golden Oak .. right this very minute.. .and I am NERVOUS about it. Like you, I didn't realize the shade of red I was dealing with and didn't realize I couldn't get a lighter, more natural shade unless we bleached the floors. We have already spent a ton of money, so, we, too, are leaning in to the red oak and hoping for the best. Your pics make me hopeful.

A light or no stain on red oak will give you pink floors, so best to go with a medium brown. A medium tone is also classic - as styles swing back and forth from light to dark I think it's best to be in the middle. Who wants to refinish their floors every 5-10 years? This way you won't have to do it again until they need it instead of when fashions change. Just don't go too cool on the brown - they shouldn't look gray. Gray floors are definitely out on the coasts - if this hasn't happened yet where you live it is on its way.

Have you done your floors yet, Emily? I'm pretty pleased with the progress on mine. In the photo you can see the raw just sanded red oak- and it's really red!! The other side has been sanded, treated with 1 coat of Berger-Seidel Pinkqualizer, 1 coat of their Nordic White, and 1 coat of Royal Matte. It will get 1 to 2 more coats of Royal Matte before it's finished. There is a lot of variation of colors in this red oak flooring, but I wasn't about to rip out the whole first floor of our home and I'm kind of liking all the different shades now. It's a really pretty floor in person.
