The leaves on the tall plant in the upper photo don't match the striped leaves in the bottom picture. It's hard to see a leaf pattern, but if they are opposite than the top tall plant could be a cynanchum or something close to it. The leaves in the bottom photo could be clematis, but I'm just taking a stab in the dark. Forget the Cynanchum suggestion. It's clematis, couldn't initially judge scale.

With the info you gave, Jay 6a, I realized this was a tiny clematis I got at a plant swap. In checking with ever-helpful Google, I id ed it as sweet autumn clematis.

Both are striped, and they look the same to me Jay. I think that they might be sweet autumn clematis, Clematis terniflora, which in warmer areas where the seeds can mature will spread invasively by seed into wild areas. So not recommended.

cross posted with you flowerful. Unfortunately often plant swap plants are ones that spread in uncontrolled fashion, either as garden thugs that overwhelm more desirable plants, or listed invasives that will spread into the wild.

Actually, sweet autumn clematis is C. terniflora. Clematis paniculata is an entirely different species with limited hardiness. Unfortunately, that species name was assigned in error to SAC early on and is still used incorrectly for that species.

C. terniflora can be invasive under certain settings....C. paniculata is not.
