How do you design kitchen cabinets?
Comments (3)It's also important to take your time. Really, relaxed planning makes the whole thing come out better in the end. You're not going to have a new kitchen for the 2016 holidays, so let that one go. You could rush the whole thing and let a kitchen company crank out a one-size-fits-all job, but how pleased would you be with the result? Buehl's links may seem like a lot, but it's so rewarding to tackle the subject and plan a kitchen that suits you, your family, and your budget. Reading through threads you'll discover all sorts of things you didn't know about even if you choose not to use them - ever run across Silgranit sinks? I'm not fond of them, but many are and I was glad to know there was such a thing. How about an air switch for the garbage disposal? Now that one I love. And everyone loves lower drawers vs cabinets. The nice thing about doing research and planning here is that you're dealing with "real people" who are interested in getting great kitchens, but not in selling you something. Also you get real people photos, not pros with wide angle lenses and pro lighting. I posted one the other day to illustrate something (spacing on a Kohler Stages sink?) where I didn't take the time to move the stuff that was sitting there (dish rack, knife in use, paper towels) before I took the photo. Those extraneous normal kitchen things were irrelevant to the issue and I'm pretty sure everyone else's kitchen has those items too. Perhaps the most import "real people" aspect is that GW people are dealing with widely varied budgets from counting every penny to what's a penny?, funky 1905 kitchens, 1950 specials, 1960 never-been-remodeled, remodeled badly, bumpy floors and walls, tiny NYC apartments, huge kitchens in Dallas, and all the issues that make real life go better or worse. Start with Buehl's links, ask questions and it will happen. Personally, we (husband and I) sat in the dining room off and on for weeks just looking at our kitchen and mentally working through all the possibilities - add on? not? push out here? use the same footprint? what works now? what needs to be better? You'll get there....See MoreWhat did you spend on kitchen cabinets?
Comments (21)watchmelol, those are great suggestions. I am afraid it will consume a lot of my time to make sure everything fits. On a project that is already 6 months delayed, i dont believe my family can afford to wait to do this all by ourselves. cpartist, thank you! Based on the feedback i am getting here, i decided to remove the valance. One small thing? I'd move your prep sink over a bit more so it's not on the edge. Leave enough space so you can put stuff down on both sides. The sink is centered to the 54" x 54" double casement window and the center of the window is 5'7" from the wall, so we are sort of stuck with that we have. We do have the island too, so that helps. What is the base cabinet to the left of the cooktop? Also what is the base cabinet to the left of the fridge/freezer? To the left of the rangetop we have a base cabinet with e double roll out tray. To the left of the fridge/freezer have a simple base cabinet with a draw up top. Do you have enough storage for pots/pans, etc? Yes, we a pantry right next to the kitchen, on the fridge/freezer side of the wall. It is 5' X 7' in size, hopefully that will be enough to stow away bigger items that will be out of sight. Stan Z, my architect had originally drawn a soffit to account for the 1' deficit in cabinets. The difference in price between having stacked cabinets and having soffits was not that much(probably $2k) so we decided to go with it. When you're trying to save money $2k sounds like a lot, but my family liked the stacked cabinet look with glass on the top cabinet, so we just ran with it. The refrigerator/freezer combo is from Electrolox Icon(https://www.lowes.com/pd/Electrolux-Refrigerator-Trim-Kit/3535332?cm_mmc=SCE_PLA_ONLY--Appliances--SosAccessories-_-3535332:Electrolux&CAWELAID=&kpid=3535332&CAGPSPN=pla&k_clickID=55ab8032-9c96-4fdb-a3b9-7113ae56f920&gclid=CKC3qvH549QCFUtNfgodWgoBnQ). I saw it in one of the local stores here and it was the best bang for the the fridge buck we found on the market. Carolina Kitchen & Bath, very reassuring to hear. Thank you for sharing. I read somewhere that that Schuler are the gold line of Medallion cabinets, not sure how accurate that is. After giving it more thought, I also have decided to remove the cabinet hood and replace it with a Broan 42" hood with an exterior blower(1200 CFM) attached. The inset hood inside the cabinet was not very practical and was less deep and had less capture area. Especially because we are using a Capital Culinarian which has high BTU output. My kitchen designer is going to make these changes to the design and will get back to me end of day today. Lowe's is having a great 20% off sale going on right now with a 10% gift card, will probably take advantage of it this July4th weekend....See Moreonly lower cabinets and drawers
Comments (6)I know this is a really old thread, but thought I would put in my two cents. We did a kitchen with no uppers, only windows and I absolutely love it! I have our plastic glasses in a drawer and our glassware in a hutch that our cabinet maker created for us. It's in the dining area of our great room and I don't mind that it isn't right in the kitchen area per se. We use the plastic most of the time and grab the glassware when we're having a nicer dinner or whatever. The plastic ones are right across from the dishwasher which is super handy. At first I had the glass ones in there, but because it's a short drawer (in the island), people kept pulling it open too fast and occasionally the glasses would fall and we broke a few. If you have the space I would definitely go for it. And do as many drawers as you can! Drawers are the best!...See MoreKitchen drawer layout on lower cabinets - need suggestions
Comments (18)@mama goose_gw zn6OH I was not planning on extra cabinets under the seating overhang, just the pony wall for support & for looks. Extra cabinets would be nice but I don't think it would work well with the seating. If I have to choose between comfortable seating or more cabinets under the island, the seating will win for us. The spice idea is neat but I agree that I'm not sure if it would work or not. I will keep it in mind though, for sure! I like the idea of the wider drawers. Suggestions on depths that are best? I like to store things vertically, when possible. It may not always be possible though. And, good idea about framing the panel out by the microwave. lol! @wilson853 Thank you for the suggestions! I'll see about the spice idea if there is any room in the design for it. Good to hear from someone who has the storage idea I had mentioned with the utensil bins. It seems like such a good use of storage because my utensil drawers get very messy fast, within 1 meal after organizing it. So, I though just put it vertically and not worry about it. lol! It should make my ocd self happier. I think....See MoreNicole Henry
