What's your must-have cool kitchen item?
Comments (38)Well, my kitchen still isn't quite done. But for now, it is my full extension drawers and the soft close on the doors and drawers. What a great feature. DB (dear boyfriend) used to make me jump everytime he shut (aka slammed) the cabinet door. Now it is quiet as a whisper--my whisper not his--he doesn't have a quiet bone in his body! I also love my faucet (pre-rinse faucet). I now know why they use those things in restaurants. Makes your life so much easier. My under cab lights which make my kitchen sexy! My Bosch dishwasher. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that thing. It is quieter than my new fridge. Cleans gunked up, caked on stuff that has been sitting there a week. Everything comes out clean as a whistle. Did I tell you that I love the thing? Granite is not too bad either Oh, by the way I Chick--check is in the mail... along with the other checks for CA state employees....Not so LOL...but one must keep a sense of humor......See MoreMust island have electric
Comments (8)For true functionality and safety, the NEC requres that all islands have at least one duplex electrical outlet. Local requirements may be more stringent than that, but they are NOT more lenient on that requirement. If the "island" is a mobile cart, then that requirment is waived. However, it's a very bad idea to try to get around that requirement by "cheating" and making the island mobile if it never really will be moved. You'd be surprised at how often that extra electrical outlet will come in handy and if you don't have it, you'd be stringing extension cords across aisles to set up your warming pan for a buffet for instance. Extension cords across kitchen aisles are a BAD idea, and that's the primary reason for the code....See More"must haves" in kitchen
Comments (48)Still in the midst of doing my kitchen but these are the things I’ve put in and been using while I’m finishing. I’m only listing the things I love. 1. Deep large single basin sink. I have the Kohler 45”. I cook and bake a lot and the sink gets filled up quickly. Love love. 2. Drawers - I squeezed in about 100 drawers in the kitchen. I designed and measured everything. Don’t do drawer in a drawer. I did drawers with false front. I get 6 drawers per cabinet which includes the toe kick. 4. Chef’s or oil drawer. Keeps my counter clear since I use a lot of condiments and oils. Haven’t had time to organize all the liquids into similar bottles for more storage. The little bottles also will go below once I free up that drawer from construction screws etc. 5. Zones. I separated the kitchen into zones. ie baking, canning, storage, pantry, snacks etc. It’s so helpful in training my husband. I don’t have to answer “Where’s _____” all the time. When he dries and outs away dishes, he knows where to go. Same thing with snacks - the man nibbles constantly. 6. Soft close. So important. The drawers all have soft close but I haven’t gotten around to the cabinet doors yet. DH bangs the pantry door about 20 times a day. 7. Large section of countertop. This will depend on your usage of the kitchen. It’s not for everyone. I put in a large island that I use completely because I bake and cook in bulk to freeze. It’s faster to prep when I have 6-7 full size sheets out and do assembly line. Best of luck with the new kitchen....See MoreSad about new walnut kitchen cabinets (anyone have solutions?)
Comments (123)Stain wouldn't block UV rays and oxidation that cause walnut/pecan to lighten (the woods are similar, so beware you aren't really getting pecan when you ordered walnut instead), but a robust clear coat and low natural lighting with an indoor location protected by walls and window glass would. Anyone choosing to pay extra for walnut should always beware of the risk of lightening over time, however, as it is a photosensitive wood. Walnut lightens over time in an opposite way as cherry darkens over time--different reactions to sunlight....See Morebtydrvn
