Rain, sun, heat, humidity-and blooms

A series of thunderstorms over the past few days and high heat resulted in high humidity-the kind that makes it hard to breathe outside. It was already 79 degrees at 9:00 this morning. Heat index yesterday was 99. But blooms kept blooming!

Navajo Pony-FFE- it actually had three blooms but could not gather them all in one frame. Spindly scapes that I hope strengthen next year. two blooms on one scape would have pulled it over to the ground.

Just a seedling-not mine of course

San Ignacio-shown before but anything that looks like this at 6 p.m. after a day in full sun needs a second look

The roadside garden is beautiful! My faves are Fantasy Fringe, Fire Dragon and Sweet Isabella.

Pippi21, thee critters are the 4 legged kind, mostly chipmunks, 1 groundhog and the bunnies where a few. nothing has worked to keep them away, the groundhog is famous for climbing my 7 foot chain link fence to get in, and the animal detergent did nothing and liquid fence and urine stuff is a waste of time and money. solved no problems or deter any critter. The groundhog met his demise. he got to close to a nesting family of red tailed hawks (or is that red winged?). either way, when the parent hawks where through with him/her, there was nothing left. My datura metal plants, grown in pots are now big enough to do some good as well as be beautiful. The chipmunks are chewing on the leaves and meeting their demise as well. Since all parts of the plant are fatal to them, and a deadly poison, we are now finding lots of dead chipmunks all over the front lawn. As for being homeless? I don't think so. these critters got their homes and dens underground all over the place. chase them away and down the holes they go. Only to return with a vengence a short time later. I gave up on bulbs years ago. Any planted where eaten within days. Now I have a few clumps of daffodils and crocus that arrived courtesy of some 4 legged critter that stole them from someone else's yard. Fran

Your Gilded By Grace looks very pretty and similar the short scapes mine had. I have a rebloom scape coming on mine. I like the perfectly round flower and the double edge. I also like Art Gallery Nouveau, especially the pattern on the sepals. I'll be interested to see how the Lambertsons do for you. agapanthus, can they take heat and humidity?

Same post as in another thread.... I have severe Zone-Denial-Disorder and also am quite stubborn and hard headed enough to try do things like growing agapanthus or other SA bulbs in tropics (miami, fla 10B) despite what many experts say. It is generally agreeed that agapanthus can be grown from zones 7 - 10 but that doesn't mean you can just stick them in the ground and have success. I really find the smaller plants do best. Mine are grown from seed and kept in very large plastic pots on northern side of house...that way I can move them into decorative pots on sides of front porch when they are in bloom then put them back where they want to be! They get several hours of light both in morning and afternoon - shaded in mid day. You can duplicate under a small tree, I guess. I water them only once/day, every morning around 5:00 am, they have an inch of pearock at bottom of pot and a 50/50 mix of potting soil sand and I don't fertilize until after they finish blooming. And yes, they are just now getting ready to bloom again - just starting to show the tips... hopefully will take a pic to post for everyone to see next week. Wish I had as much success with clivia! lol!

Andy, your forecast doesnt look too extreme so your palms should be okay. Anyone in the mid atlantic has a chance of seeing several days in the mid to upper 90s and even some triple digit heat with few clouds and low humidity. Im thinking about bringing my chamaedoras inside even though its in shade. Really going to be a lot of heat here. Low temperatures are going to be in the mid to upper 70s throughout the week maybe 80 for a day or 2 and high temps will definitely be exceeding 90 and even 95 on some days. I dont think there will be 100 degree heat here, but its going to be close. The heat can be just as bad as the cold for some palms. Anything over 100 seems to begin to stress many out with the desert palms being an exception. Good luck! -Alex Good luck!

The garden looks lovely. Sweet Isabwella is a beauty. I like the seedling and Fantasy Fringe. And Fire DRagon looks good with the blue flowers beside it. Navajo Pony looks good. It is darker than mine. I had a nice clump on my missing post, but maybe they will post it Monday.

Nice bed! I bet people slow down to look at that when it's in bloom! San Ignacio is a nice daylily. It grew really well here. We haven't seen a pattern on Get Jiggy very often here. It's too bad because when it does have a pattern, it's really nice. My favorites today are Fantasy Fringe (I like the shape of the eye and the color) and Sweet Isabela. I love pinks with a watermark.

Love that roadside bed, probably stops traffic. Fire Dragon looks great today. I do like Navajo Pony, hope it improves for you.

I think your Roadside bed looks excellent. Lots of yellow sparkles in amongst the other colors. What a pretty foursome Fire Dragon makes too..........Our temperature was 98 today, 98 tomorrow and 98 Friday (I was afraid to even look at the heat index). I think I'm sensing a pattern. Summer has arrived......Maryl

Lovely group. Fire Dragon steals the show but the roadside garden bed is impressive and impeccable. A beautiful setting.

Maryl, I feel your pain with the temps. Boo, hiss!!! And of course there are lots of yellow lovelies in there!

Hoosier Nan, I have had Get Jiggy for many years and last year was the only year for a pattern. I have two clumps of it and neither patterns. Sherry, I hope Navajo Pony scapes improve. I had to practically lie on my back this morning to get a photo of two blooms! Debra and Kay, Sweet Isabela has looked good this year. I have some lovely dark photos from cool mornings. And Fantasy Fringe has fantastic color!!

I live in the country. No one around me grows daylilies and only my next door neighbor grows flowers. She has a few landscape daylilies. Other homes have green lawns and green shrubs-no color. I live far enough off the road that one would have to drive up the driveway to get a good look at the flowers but most people are not interested. Except me!!!!
