Do you mean there's a 3" space between the built-in and the ceiling? Post some photos! :-)

if what i'm reading is correct, I'd use molding that would fill in the top space up to the ceiling and also wrap it around the sides of the built in, so it will appear to be like a finished top to the piece (like it was a piece of furniture/cabinet etc). that won't look odd even if the rest of the room doesn't have trim/molding. IMO

sorry there are no photos but it would be odd a blank wall. I can explain a bit further. Where the unit starts the height is 92 inches. where it ends, it is 89 inches. The ceiling slopes down 3 inches.
So I guess the question is make the top horizontal to the floor or with the ceiling?

right. I guess it's not too bad to have shelves end on a sloped ceiling. The slope isn't as dramatic as these pictures show so an extra 3 inches on the highest portion is perfectly acceptable.

I was totally thinking of a slope going the *other* direction -- from back to front, not from left to right -- because my house has ceilings that slope that way, and I have cabinetry that reaches the 8' height of the ceiling, leaving a gap as the ceiling comes up and out toward the middle of the 10' room. Totally different things! :-O
