Living Room - Narrow & Open Floor Plan - Sofa Layout Help

We moved into our new home and I'm stuck on how to layout furniture in the living room. The model home had 2 equally sized sofas along each window wall but I'm unsure about that placement because it seems to hinder the flow of conversation. I have 17 feet by 12.5 feet to work with, and across from the 3 windows is the island/kitchen.

I'd like to have seating for 6, and don't plan on installing a TV. What sofa/chair layout would you do?

Other than that, you could put a 3 seater sofa in front of back windows with 4 small scaled swivel chairs.

I don't think the model layout hinders conversation but it's not enough seating for 6. Use newspaper or blue painters tape to layout the furniture in different configurations. Try the 2 sofas facing each other. 1 on the wall where the cabinet is now and 1 opposite. Another way would be 1 on the 3 windows wall and opposite it. 2 small scale swivel chairs could be added

I was thinking the 2 sofas facing each other but I'd have to float them away from the wall because they's be too far apart. Struggling with the sofa opposite the 3 window wall, though I really love the idea of it, because I think it would be too close to kitchen island (and no room for a sofa table). Good idea with tape, going to try that now :)

It's gigantic. I'd be trying like hell to avoid that. I'd use the dining table in the dining room for a combo desk /office. I'd buy more flexibility.......comfortable flexibility. A tv can mount flat to the wall, With an IR repaeater, it needs no console beneath. The cable box can go anywhere. I'd get a nice deep and comfy 84 inch sofa, put a console with lamps behind. Add two super comfy chairs and ottomans. A nice generous, light and open cocktail table. Lie down! watch the tube! Put your feet up! Add a little ottoman for a perch at the cocktail table. People love to sit and reach a snack. Add a low table between the chairs at the fire......open and light. Ten x 14 rug to ground everything. ( dotted line ) Go set yourself up in the dining room, to work, and just clean up when you have guests !! No matter the sprawl, no more than three folks will ever sit on that beast of a sectional : ) Two chairs and a total of three ottoman plus at least two on a sofa............for gatherings gives you seven seats. A smashing piece of art over the fire too.

I have this same problem. Our living room is 11x20, with two radiators, two double width doorways and an extra wide staircase, and a corner fireplace. There's really nothing to be done but divide a space like that into two. It's half office and half living room, which means that practically we only have about an 11x8 space for a living room. At least you have a lot of wall space. I would use the sofa as a divider between the spaces, and a sectional would definitely be the best. Is there a doorway that we can't see on the wall past the stairs?

Your rectangle is 18' 10" wide and about 24' long ? You'll have more options if you put your tv on a portable stand rather than hanging it on the wall or set atop a console. Then you could angle it in the corner and face your sofa toward the slider with one end of the sofa against an end table against one of the walls to create a room divider. You might invest in some graph paper for drawing the room to scale -- or print it out drawn to scale -- and then invest in some heavier card stock to cut out the size and shape of each piece of furniture you already have so you can move the pieces around on the floor plan without lifting furniture (and/or invest in sliders). A sectional limits the options for furniture placement and, if any part of it is stained or damaged then you're needing to replace a lot of seating or live with it.

It's about 14 feet of wall before the oven/microwave.

So a sofa could go on that wall.

If it is feasible to put sofa on wall without windows that would be the first choice.

From Eastern Feng Shui standpoint, sofa with back to windows is not the best. So sofa on window free wall would be better. With sofa in front of back windows at least there is another wall of windows in your space, so that helps.

Set up below is ideal for conversation and you could try switching seating around to best suit room

The other idea is to use a sectional and chairs
