Thursday Before and After Some Rain

We're having a few rounds of showers here, and it's very humid.

Kara Louise ffo - This is a bonus Dan Hansen sent me last fall when I bought some of his other reds. It's very pretty and has that white edge I love on red. Three blooms greeted me this morning. I took the picture of the threesome after the rain. I have quite a few new reds that will be blooming this season.

Stenciled Infusion, one of my very favorite daylilies, had its ffo today.

Venetian Pools had a superb pattern today.

You love red like I love yellow. How pretty those two reds are. Reds are so hard to find though that are colorfast/sunfast as you well know. Now that Dale Hensley has left Blue Ridge, (one of my favorite hybridizers who did sunfast reds better then most), it's harder then ever to find them without spending a kings ransom. You spoiled me with Acquire the Fire for a dark ruby red. It's all your fault-lol..................I seldom like eyed daylilies, but Skater has such a neat looking eye that it draws my attention. I love Stenciled Infusion. Your clump shots of it last year were awe inspiring. If Facemaker ever looked this clean it would be something.........Maryl

Maryl - You wondered if Facemaker would be whiter in the heat. It's not. It's more yellow than cream with the heat and humidity. Those photos you saw that made the petal color look white were not reality. They were either the result of people using cameras that tend to "blue" everything up, or it was caused by light blowback. I didn't photograph it this morning because one petal wasn't fully open.

Pinks and purples are still my top favorites. I've acquired more reds because I'm hybridizing with them. Having gotten good results from my red breeding, I wanted more reds to cross with my red seedlings. I do tend to like the reds more and more each year though. oranges too..

Tilling soil is not necessary to prepare a planting bed and some research indicates that tilling can be more harmful than not because tilling disrupts the soil fungi and also brings up more "weed" seeds. I would lay down some light impervious material, such as newspaper or cardboard, which will kill off any plant growth in that area now and cover that with the compost and allow the soil bacteria to move the compost into the soil for me.

The clump of Apricot Jade is eyecatching, and I see Mexican Magic peeking through the blooms. It looks good with Apricot Jade! My other favorite photos are the clumps of Rose Masterpiece and Bill Norris. Both of those are classics that never go out of style. I look forward to my Bill Norris clump reblooming soon. Mephistopholes looks like a fine, rich purple. I find myself wanting to add it to that hospital bed you tend. It would look spectacular with those gold daylilies and the black-eyed Susans. And yes, I admit I have bought duplicate plants by mistake. Imperial Empress is so pretty I can see why you would buy it more than once. Debra

Thanks again. INCA PRINCE is one I think most folks would thoroughly enjoy having. When it blooms, you know it. Be warned about Spacecoast Seashells. It does have a tendency to not open all the way and then other times, it is fine. I've kept a very small clump here after I sold off my very large clump. I've put the smaller clump in a south facing temporary bed. I hear you Nancy about Ed Brown. So many have said it and others like me, have no problem with it. Julia

WOW ,,RITA; That first photo is absolutely breathtaking.Just gorgeous.And the second photo of the Lilies is gorgeous, too...Well,I was wanting to see a close up photo of the Oriental lilies.I thought several thats in my back yard was Oriental Lilies, but, no, they not.At least they look nothing like any you have.The foliage is different,and spreads out to make big plants,and I hate the things.They have been cut down so many times,and they come right back.They have huge stalks, but soon as a flower shows up, they fall over on the ground.Ran over them with a lawn mower and cut them off to the ground and 2 weeks later they back up with bloom stalk. I love that TIKAL MAID . its beautiful,and BARNEY IS GORGEOUS.I love that one the most. MALAYSIAN MARKETPLACE is gorgeous, too..You really have some beauties.I am glad you posted BARNEY again,as I think hes beautiful. Jean

Nice group of daylilies. Kara Louise is sure a beauty. That's the way I like reds--with white edge. I am also drawn to Michigan Nikki. That photo of Kiss of Paradise is lovely. Ours has scapes but it will be awhile before it blooms.

What a great new red with a triple. Stenciled Confusion is off to a great start today. Im liking Michigan Nikki more each time you post it. Kiss of Paradise Is showing Off early in the season For you, definitely photo worthy. My gardens need to borrow some of your rain, none for a week.....

Julia - I'm glad you like the patterns. The patterned ones are what I have most in the very early season. I hope your husband is doing well after his surgery.

Kate, Sherry and Hoosier Nan - I'm glad you all like Kara Louise. I think I may end up liking the bonus more that the reds I actually ordered from Ladybug. Tomorrow some more of my Ladybug reds should open.

Sherry and Hoosier Nan - The hotter it is, the prettier Michigan Nikkii looks. In a few days, I should have a clump shot of it.

I really like that Kiss of Paradise group! It is stunning. Stenciled infusion is indeed a beauty. And, of course, Karen Marie hits me up perfectly since I love red and with the white edge it is gorgeous. Venetian Pools was really something too. Nce one, Debra!

I really like Kara Louise, and Venetian Pools is very photo worthy today. Mine just started scaping a couple of days ago so will be a while before I see blooms. Kiss of Paradise almost looks artificial it is so perfect. Really like the form of that one I can rarely get a good clump shot. They all face completely different directions, like a family argument at the dinner table. I have only had one clump so far with several blooms, Carabbean Eye Spy, and every bloom is at opposite ends of the clump looking outward.
