Mulch Now or Later?
Comments (3)Is it hard to mulch when the perennials have emerged because they fill the bed? If so, there shouldn't be a huge need to mulch to control weeds - the perennials themselves will discourage them. If you are mulching to replenish organic matter and add to soil fertility, then I'd elect to do that in late fall, after you've cleaned up the area for winter. Yes, mulch can potentially slow or retard the development of any plant depending on size. Certainly it will do so with annuals or any self-seeding perennials but it also can smother other, less robust types of herbaceous perennials before they emerge from the ground. It is also just as likely to promote fungal issues and crown rots if spread completely over perennials....See MoreMix Now, Bake Later
Comments (2)If you get the baking powder wet, it'll do its thing (or half if you have double action). The eggs can turn weird too. Can you assemble kits? Stir together all the dry ingredients and seal them in a ziploc, or just a covered mixing bowl since you'll be baking tomorrow. Measure out the wet ingredients individually in jars, and put the jars for a single recipe in an open container to keep them together, along with the whole eggs. Or maybe just use a food marker, or a piece of tape, to label each egg as to which batter it goes in so they're easy to grab. You could color code each recipe so you don't have to read the labels. Freezing is different than chilling. If you refrigerate the cakes, they could get tough. Cold causes the starches to tighten, which is what "stale" means. Better to make cakes that can be frozen a couple of days ahead and freeze them (freezing should suspend the starches rather than tightening them, plus cakes can be softer and fluffier after freezing), than closer to the day and refrigerate them. Good luck! That's an ambitious load, but it sounds delicious!...See Moresecond part of deck now or later?
Comments (3)I believe expansion of a deck is fairly common. In your case, since you know your objective, take some time to plan the enlargement. Presuming that everything will be at the same level, and section "A" decking runs parallel to the house, have some short pieces of decking along the side of "A" that abuts "B" that you can remove to nest the boards into a common floor. Call this your "hooks" so an expansion will not be as apparent. All of the decking boards will run the same direction for both sections. The option of mitering or doing herringbone corners for your "L" shape is lost with a multiple segment build. If bug free in the screened portion is your goal, remember to install some screening below the decking for that section. The only problem I foresee is the decking lumber itself. It shrinks after installation. Because the new lumber will be "unshrunk", poitiioning them to be uniform will necessitate your measuring rather than merely spacing for their placement. Hope this helps. Good luck....See Moremove roses now or later?
Comments (9)wanted to give everyone an update! I moved over five roses about 2 days ago and when I have checked on them they look great! 3 of them don't even look like they are in shock at all and 2 are only very slightly wilty at the very tops. the weather was warm but not to hot/kind of cool, partly overcast, and light rain. Turned out to be perfect! The day I moved them I pulled them up and put them in their new spots (I could remember at least I KNOW I planted tall ones in the back and short ones in the front so I just kept them generally the same depth into the garden but moved them all way over to the right). Then I built little shades for them using landscaping fabric and bamboo sticks, set up the shades to block sun from the west and close to but not touching the roses. Watered them gently 3x the day I moved them. I am shocked at how good they look and am so happy! When my husband came up the driveway I was setting up the shades and I told him "I'm growing pirate ships!" because he was confused as to why there were black sails all over the garden hahah....See Morenycefarm
