Vegetative(?) buds on Yonlade d'A

This is a baby Y d'A that I planted from bare root early April and it has formed a good many buds:

However several of these have a very tight green center. Is this a flower bud with a vegetative center? What are these called? And why do they happen?

This is a normal bud:

I have seen these forming on several of my roses, especially earlier in the season.

I did not see these at bud stage. Is this the kind of deformation one sees in a flower when a bud has that green center?

Well, my question is there is no point to these buds is there? should I just remove these so the remaining normal buds have more energy? When I stopped and took notice it seems these kind of buds go slower than others and get very big and do not necessarily bloom proper;y.

Some roses, like gallicas, are simply more prone than others to displaying these vegetative green centres, aka proliferation (or is that just when they get really big and sprout another bud and flower? - I've forgotten now) - but also, what I've learnt from the experiences of people here is that they seem to tend to occur when there's been a sudden sharp change in the weather - IIRC, when it's been getting warm, possibly unseasonably, and then it reverts back to a sudden cold spell; and/or sometimes it seems to relate to very high nitrogen fertilising, either deliberate or unintentional, eg roses grown in an area with lots of old chicken poop in the soil where there was a former chook run. Maybe something here will ring a bell for you?

Whether you leave them on or not is up to you I think - afaik they don't cause any harm to the plant. If you're a bit weird like me, you might even get rather fond of them, to the point of having a Redoute painting of a proliferated rose as my little ID picture thingy here on Garden Web! Other, more sensible and upstanding folk would of course never give in to such foolishness...

Although... I do seem to recall hearing in the not-too-distant past that roses with vegetative green centres had become fashionable - models were carrying them down catwalks in fashion shows, and then people wanted to buy them to display as cut flowers at home - and breeders were breeding them specially to supply this demand. But of course those ones probably all have attractive leafy green centres in healthy looking roses, whereas others may never be more than manky looking buds that don't open or form flowers properly and may never look nice...

Comtesse! I left those buds. I will wear them to the supermarket when they bloom. Maybe someone will notice how fashionable I am. And I will get one of my kids to draw pictures of them and wait till the pictures fetch a nice sum. And I owe it all to you!! In my case it could be nitrogen but since I see them only early in the season, it could be be very well due to the wild swings in temperature we get at this time of year. Now I know! <3

Here it's a dreary day, having poured down during the night. I've gotten bad about paying attention to the weather forecasts. All I know is that somehow by Friday we're squeezing in THREE cold fronts. I wonder how that will work out. My paths need blowing SO badly. I continually think to myself I'm going to get the blower, but ha! Saying the words doesn't get it done even though it's such an easy job. My red camelia japonica that grows in a pot due to my at best neutral soil has one flower on it. It bloomed in November. I didn't know it would bloom again. Yesterday I really admired my Duquesa bush. It is so lovely and shapely about six feet across and four feet tall, hugging the 90-degree turn in the front sidewalk perfectly with lots of pretty, fragrant light peachy flowers. She is such a winner! Alas, poor Le Vesuve is a ratty version of itself with one large (1" diameter) cane dead and not much happening elsewhere. Methinks he is saying goodbye. Dare I think of a possible replacement, a big one since it's in the round center front bed? I feel I'm on the razor's edge of being a gardener or not being a gardener, continuing the garden or not continuing the garden, not knowing how to proceed. On the walk to the mailbox Hermosa's bright pink flowers always catch my eye right before her rangy, nearly naked canes do. Poor Darcy Bussell and SDLM are surrounded by weeds, and the driveway bed which has not been tended at all since May is a foot high with Bermuda grass thanks to my semi-abandoned neighbor's yard. I was startled a couple of days ago when I saw that the grass was blooming big whitish single flowers. Ahha! It wasn't the grass but rather Souv de St Anne's, unseen except for her blooms. So pretty. I don't even go out for the mail every day, so I barely know what's going on out there. I do think if I could just get the litter blown off the paths in the back I'd be happier and more confident about the future of it all. Poof! All done. Thanks for all the updates and for the lovely poetry! Culture at GW? Who'd a-thunk? For me, we never got a freeze, and not a single leaf has dropped that I can tell. Everything looks as well as it did before the cold snap (which wasn't all that great anyway, due to my long neglect). And as for myself, as long as the plants don't freeze, I don't care how cold it gets. I love it. Never turned the fan off at night, and never turned the heat on, even once. I did have a nice fire going in the family room for three mornings running. That always makes me happy...snuggly & cozy for reading by, but not heating up the back rooms. I like to sleep in a cool or even cold room. Our fireplace is just enough to warm up the family room, library and kitchen, while the living room and bedrooms stay pretty cool. PERFECTION!! It's sunny and beautiful outside today, so Mark is laying brick. I, alas, have to continue cleaning out the guest room for my daughter's visit. (I had pretty much been using it as an oversized closet for a year! Couldn't even SEE the bed in there!) But tomorrow, I expect to be able to spend some time in the backyard. I seem to be having the same problem there healthy leave but it seems like it keeps getting more and more brown and drying leaves and the buds brown and die out before they open. my apartment does not get alot of light and not room to put them in front of the window so it sits across the room from the window that gets morning sun thru it. I have it inside because my back porch which is very small gets mostly sunlight all day very strong. as of today I tried putting it out there for about an hour and made sure I watered it beforehand I got it half dead from my mother for Mother's Day and it's in the same pot it started in which is a hanging basket it has a few different plants in the same basket I'm just not sure how to bring it back I haven't managed to get plant food yet as we're a little short on money but I have no idea if I'm over watering it or if it should be getting more Sun during the day. This is literally my first plant besides a small thing of grass my children got for Easter so I am literally brand new at growing anything and my mom thought it was a brilliant idea to give me apparently one of the hardest flowers to grow for my first plant and then give it to me half dead lol. it's her favorite plant that's why she got it but I have no idea what to do with it and I don't want it to die it's not very big the longest ones probably 9 inches but it's a pretty small plant.

Marigolds are annuals here... I'm not sure about your area msdorkgirl ...??? One stock with flowers on top??? I use French Marigolds here and they are very stinky.... I have no idea if Marigolds will help with thrips and Spider mites since I've never seen those insects here with or without Marigolds planted... Sorry...??? I would NOT plant Marigolds in the same pot your roses are in that's for sure ... Your situation is different because all your roses are in pots... So you would have to get more pots to plant Marigolds in then sit those pots around your roses is all I can think of??? You could of just bought a couple Marigolds and potted those up and sat them close to a rose bush you were having trouble with to see if it helped... Experimenting like that is what I did... Here's a young Marigold plant I started from seed... Here's what they look like when they get a bit older... Ours will grow like 10 inches high by 14 inches wide...They bloom heavily all season long here... I sat these 3 large pots in the back of this rose bush... I have a smaller pot in front of the rose bush... And I got 2 real small seedlings growing near that bush... This Marigold plant is in a much smaller pot....
