I burned my rose plant with homemade pesticide. What should I do?

It’s my second time to use a baking soda-cooking oil-dishwashing liquid-water mixture as a pesticide for my rose plant. So I thought it would go well like the first time I sprayed it to my plant. But when I looked at it a while ago, I saw black spots like it was burned, especially with the buds. I’m so sad. I don’t know what I should do. I think I put too much oil or I was not able to rinse it well. Will the buds still bloom? There are some buds that are not affected but there are more buds that have black spots on them, even on some leaves. I rinsed the plant and removed it from direct sunlight as soon as I could. What should I do now

This mixture has the potential to be quite phytotoxic (toxic to living plant tissue) if mixed incorrectly or applied under certain conditions (too warm, in direct sunlight). If you need to rid your plant of insects in the future, you'll get far better results by using an "insecticidal soap" which is formulated to do a very specific thing without being potentially damaging to the plant. It is quite safe to use inside the home, and in the garden, on vegetables, etc. Insecticidal soaps are commonly found at garden centers and nurseries. You shouldn't have difficulty finding one.

Rinse it and water well. Keep out of sun for a day or two, and no more voodoo concoctions Lol. If you have a specific pest, ask here for treatment help.

There is actually nothing "voodoo" about a baking soda spray for roses. It is a well accepted homemade recipe for powdery mildew and blackspot control. But the timing of the spray is critical. You need to do it very early in the day so it has sometime to dry before intense midday sun hits it. Or on a cloudy or overcast day.

Spraying any kind of pesticide midday is just asking for a phytotoxic reaction, which is what has happened. Not the end of the world and the plant will recover.

MadGallica, it is always surprising to me how little I know and still stumble along. [g] And here I was feeling guilty that I hadnÃ¢ÂÂt gotten that rose in the ground yet, when I could have waited two more weeks. Yes, I realize the delivery wasnÃ¢ÂÂt too early for the usual spring, I requested last week of March for delivery. My ground was still frozen and I had snow on the ground when they arrived and they had to wait in the refrigerator for 10 more days before I could plant. I only potted up one and then decided the rest had new growth on them and IÃ¢ÂÂd just wait it out. The other bare root roses were planted in the ground weeks ago and are all growing well so far. I donÃ¢ÂÂt know if it is a grafted rose. I ordered from Pickering and it is a David Austin, Ã¢ÂÂBrother CadfaelÃ¢ÂÂ. On their website they discuss that they use R. multiflora as a rootstock, so I assume that means they are grafted? And I found a drawing of where the graft is supposed to be planted [below] and IÃ¢ÂÂm pretty sure mine is too high. I also am planting in an exposed area and would like to give the plant a little more help with winter weather and wondered if I should plant it a little deeper. But there are leaves growing low on the shrub now. In the drawing below, they show the soil mounded up around the bottom of the stems and the graft right about at ground level, is that right? Well, Sunday IÃ¢ÂÂll try to dig it up and IÃ¢ÂÂll post a photo of the rose so I can get it right this time.

Sheri, the Teas probably don't need any pruning at all for a few years. You WANT them to start building up that twiggy framework Ann was describing elsewhere. Abe Darby isn't an Old Garden Rose. It's modern rose, with an "old-fashioned" bloom form. It was bred from the modern Large-Flowered Climber,'Aloha', and a modern Floribunda, 'Yellow Cushion.' I have and RdR in a pot that I've wintered (outside, don't have a garage) for 5 years now and it's done just fine. But if you intend on putting it in the ground it might be best to do so now rather than waiting. Plant it deep, deeper than it is in the pot by anywhere from 4 to 8 inches, and mulch it a good 6 or 8 inches high or even higher if you can. And try not to disturb the root ball at all when you remove it from the pot to put it in the ground. If you decide to keep it in the garage there are two things you need to do. First, get the pot off the cement floor by putting it on wood blocks. Concrete is like a sponge and will suck the moisture from the pot as well as transmit temperatures. Second, do water it! Make sure it is well watered going in and about once a month either give it a drink or put a shovel full of snow on top of the pot. It doesn't need a ton of water but it does need to stay hydrated. It isn't how low the temperatures go that kill them but the rapid up and down change of temperature and the drying out (desication) that does them in. Rose de Rescht is one of my favorite roses. Lovely pink blooms with a button center and a heavenly scent! Enjoy yours!

Thanks everyone! What a relief...I had seen that hibiscus can get blackspot doing a search. Which wigged me out. Because I have had mine for over 10 years with no problems. And the rose tree was beside it in the sun room. Ken...I have a sun room with 4 foot square skylights on two sides and windows all around. My tropical hibiscus thrives in there. But if you feel the rose tree should be kept outside then outside it will remain. Just having crazy rain here in Ohio and was trying to protect it. Sprayed the tree out on the back landing for blackspot...I'll leave it remain outdoors once it dries. What sucks is...I was planning on taking it up to a neighbors house while away on a mission trip in a few weeks. I don't think that wise with the fungus...it is dropping leaves at a fast rate. So sad...it was beautiful...until this fungus got to it.

GG - with cooking oil? And dish soap? That crosses the line for me into potentially harmful. And OP noted it was a pesticide she was looking for.

Yes.....it is a recipe that is advocated by many rosarians as well (you can find it on the Heirloom Roses website). Obviously, it is diluted in water and the cooking oil OR dish soap - you don't need both - is added to help the solution to adhere to the foliage. Folks use petroleum based horticultural oils all the time for various issues....plant based oils, like cooking oil or neem oil, are arguably more environmentally friendly and are also used extensively.

btw, "pesticide" is a non-specific or catch-all term for any product that is used to kill pests. And that can include insect pests (insecticide), weedy plant pests (herbicide), fungal diseases (fungicide) and all manner of other pestilential issues (rodenticide, miticide, molluscicide, nematicide, etc.).

I have used the same mix (with horticultural oils, not cooking oil) years ago when temp was under 75 F. I am up north though. Your rose doesn't look too bad. I am guessing the temp wasn't too hot when you sprayed it.
