Two Story Foyer Decorating Dilemma!
Hello! Just moved into a new town house and I need some advice on a few things. 1. When you first come through the front door I feel as if the area rug is placed incorrectly or it may be too small. It also feels very empty when you first walk in and there’s only tile. I could put a small mat but then I feel as if it’s be “tacky” with the area rug. Any suggestions?
- When you go up the stairs to the second level there is a ton of space. I was thinking maybe a bench and a large photo above it?

3 years agoI actually bought the area rug in a runner too I just thought it wasn’t wide enough! @housegal200 I was thinking maybe if I had a wider entryway table or like a sideboard it would be more proportional.

Comments (9)Cove lighting is indirect lighting from light strips mounted at the upper edge of the walls shining onto the ceiling. I would think having the cove lighting along the entire length of the outside, fireplace and opposite walls would do great. You typically hide the strips with crown molding. If you use LED, the strips will be thinner than T8 tubes. Consequently, the crown molding can be less beefy. I would get rid of the recessed light. The last option would be to put in an array of recessed lights. I won't recommend that as it would involve a significant amount of work and the lighting effects will depend on the installed lights. Comments (29)Am contemplating doing this type of project in our house. Our 2-story foyer is just a waste of space and I'm not a fan. I'd like to close it off and have it become the master bedroom's walk in closet. I'd keep the big window but put up a privacy curtain. Our current master closet could then be closed off and re-opened from the bedroom on the other side - allowing my daughter to have a walk-in closet. We'd then tear down the walls of her current closet which would give her more floor space in her room. I don't think we'd lose anything on resale because the new master closet would be twice the size of our current one, AND the added bonus of another bedroom also having a walk-in closet....See Moretwo story foyers
Comments (11)Technically a *traditional centerhall colonial would be pretty unlikely to have a two story foyer: the stairwell might be open, but the entry to the front bedrooms would be at the front of the house ( above the front door ) and any ornamental window above the entry door would be in the upper stair hall. Comments (11)Hi there! I’m in a similar situation, except that our 2 story foyer faces north and doesn’t get much light. The floors are a white oak stained walnut. The adjacent north facing family room will be painted BM stonington gray (to complement the south facing dining room, which will be painted BM Newburyport Blue). I was planning on painting the foyer and upstairs hallway BM Wickham Gray. But after reading several articles about northern exposure, I’m second guessing the Wicham Gray. 3 years agoActually, I was thinking a runner going the other way, so people entering step right on to it. So two options: leave this one as is. Or have a carpet store cut and bind it into a shorter runner then use your other piece for the middle of the entryway. (A round complementary rug would also look nice in the space.)
As for your console, center it on that wall, and get a lovely (vintage?) chair to put on one side of it. Put a tall lamp on the console and maybe a large art work or mirror above. This idea though, of course, your orientation is the other direction.

3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoIMO a long runner makes more sense or two rugs with the same pattern but different sizes. The color you have selected is all wrong for the foyer IMO. You could use more contrast and a larger bolder pattern for the floor with some dark tones in it.
Also, you have a LOT of beadboard on top of beadboard. You might want to consider changing some of that. I think the area is better suited to a board and batten wall detail.
How far does the tile extend? I would cover that with LVT in a wood grain.
This is board and batten. Having your beadboard extend up so very far makes your skinny foyer look even skinnier.

3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoI think your entrance could become much more welcoming, so before buying a rug, maybe look at inspiration pictures to select the right style vs just the right size. Based on the walls and the black chandelier, modern farmhouse could be a great look. Don’t have to do everything at once, but if you have a plan, it will be coordinated as you make updates.
Would place a very large rectangle rug, placed after the staircase, so it makes that wider area more prominent and highlighted by the decor
Suggest moving your table and art to the upstairs landing and now you can coordinate the whole space using a longer console with art or mirror on the long wall. If you add baskets on floor it will help hide the heating element. Where your previous table was, add a bench and hooks, both being really handy
You could paint the interior door black if owner allows
On upper wall of staircase a set of large family prints would be very nice
