Question regarding Kohler Whitehaven sink

I made a decision to get the 33” Kohler Whitehaven sink for my kitchen remodel, but then started having second thoughts. I use a lot of Barkeepers Friend to clean things like Pyrex bakeware, and other hard to clean pans. Even if I don’t use it to clean the sink, will my regular use of it in the sink cause the sink to loose it’s shiny finish?

I love my Kohler Whitehaven. Make sure you get the sink grates to avoid scratches. It is unnecessary to clean the sink with barkeepers friend, but fine to clean your pots with it.

That’s not what I would worry about with enameled cast iron sinks, but they can loose their sheen. My worry would be that they can chip, crack, and rust, and if yours does, Kohler will replace it, but you have to pay to have the sink changed. I am a stainless steel sink person all the way, but if you really want a white sink, consider solid surface or silgranit. While these are not perfect sink materials either (use the search engine here to find posts on them) they are more durable than enameled cast iron.

I know making all these decisions can be tough, and just when you’ve decided on something, someone pipes in and recommends you consider something else - it can be a pain. As far as enameled cast iron goes, the Whitehaven is well regarded, and nothing else really looks quite like it. If that’s the sink you really want, go for it. Just also start a piggy bank for the replacement process.

If a Kohler Whitehaven was installed with a Pete's Sink Mount Kit, I'd change it out in an hour, plumbing included. I'm certain.

We have a 30" Kohler whitehaven sitting in out basement awaiting the cabinets. I love the look and can't wait to have it in place. I read alot of threads and decided against fireclay. Next I searched around and found that some of the cast iron apron sinks are soooo pricey. The whitehaven fit the bill. Best price, self-trimming and has the look I wanted. My cabinet guy was happy to hear that it was self-trimming. I got it for $637 dollars on-line from efaucets but be careful because the shipping is expensive. My freight shipping was over a hundred dollars.

That was some of my concern...our dishwasher is going to the left of the sink. It will be a panel dishwasher. Was concerned there should be more cabinet meat showing. But is seems the consensus here is that it should be OK. I think the panel on the dishwasher will make it seem less apparent. The whitehaven is like a "mock" farmhouse sink in that the front has a self trimming feature, so the actual cut in the cabinet will be an inch from the side, and than the front covers up almost the entire front (33 inch cabinet covered by 32 11/16" apron front). It is not like the Rohl. Using the 33" sink in a 33" cabinet makes the support inside easier to install. Using a small sink one would need to build out the sides more so they fall under the sink. @cpartist How do you like the DXV Hillside? Any pros/cons with it? Anyone else have one? We were originally considering the 36" Shaw farmhouse sink but the salesman said they all end up crazing over time. He said that Shaw makes their sinks they same way they did 100 years ago and it takes 3 days to dry. In those 3 days the sink settles and thats why the bottom can not consistently drain towards the drain (thus puddling) and that the settling enables the crazing to happen over time. He showed us several sinks like the Franke and Home Refinements Julien but those two were too modern for our kitchen (thinner walls). He said if you're going for a really worn in kitchen with lots of character in a 100 year old house, then those crazing spider webs on the Shaw won't matter. Our house is built in the 1930's with white inset shaker cabinets but I still don't want to look at cracks in my sink. The Hillside has almost the same dimensions and thicker walls like the Shaw. He said they poke a hole in the bottom front in the drying process and all the liquid fireclay pours out and leaves a shell of a sink. That leaves the sink sounding a bit more hollow when you knock on it, but also allows it to dry in one day so that it retains its shape. The water will drain toward the drain and the sizes don't vary like the Shaw (+/- 2%). I'm worried if something went wrong with the Shaw and we had to replace it, that it wouldn't fit exactly in the original cutout for the sink. I'm not too aware of the DXV brand though. Any good?

i wrote this question when I was in a panic. Had really just wanted to know if you thought there was a big difference in color. I had ordered Biscuit and then didn't know if it was worth the extra cost. I currently have a Kohler white sink that I love. But, our house is very primitive and I worried that a stark white apron front sink would be too much. Since I asked this question, I've had a chance to look at a biscuit one in someone's home and it is the right one for us. Thanks so much. Look for my question bout countertops!!

Emily - One of the things I like about the Whitehaven was the 2 grids. What I dislike about my current single bowl SS sink is the large awkward single grate. You think I’ll be fine using BKF IN the sink, as long as I don’t use it regularly to clean the sink, right?
Eam44 - I have those worries as well. Who would have thought that a sink would be the one remodel item that I get stuck on.

Yes, I love the grid in 2 parts so it fits in the dishwasher. And you can buy extra “feet” when they get nasty. I use Kohler sink cleaner, but I’ve also used Mrs Meyers cream cleanser.

I have had nothing but Kohler enamel sinks in every house save this remodel-before-last, when I went with stainless. I didn’t hate it, but I’m just an enamel girl. I put in my first 33” Whitehaven last year and I love it, except I could hav done easily with a 30” and I do regret not going smaller. I have never scratched a Kohler, though I did get one tiny chip in one about 30 years ago, but the sink was that gorgeous old Kohler Cobalt Blue and so it wasn’t TOO noticeable. This IS my first white enamel, so I clean it with Kohler cleanser, not too expensive at Amazon, and with Soft Scrub. It looks like new. That said, I am a careful and meticulous cleaner, and no longer have kids at home.

Thanks MizLizzie - Just 2 of here, but we seem use pots and pans as if we were a family of 5. I just want to make sure I can scrub them, if needed, without worrying about the sink.
