What would you do differently if you could?
Comments (1)I am not expert what-so-ever(just finished the gunite phase of our build) so take this with a grain of salt. If it were up to me, I would dump the EasyTouch ICP and use that money to upgrade to the IntelliBrite light. You already have the EasyTouch Wireless Controller listed, I don't know why you would need both. I would also add a booster pump so you can run water features with the spa going. Not sure about the skimmers, seems like you would want two but I am not an expert....See MoreIf you can do it over, what would you do differently?
Comments (32)Just to jump in regarding working with an architect and timing - we started out the process working with an architect. This is our second build so we had a really good idea of what we wanted and thought we had a productive meeting with the architect. Then, it took 3-4 weeks to get the preliminary drawings, which weren't close to what we had in mind, and also which would have resulted in a home almost double our budget according to the first couple of builders we met with (the architect was aware of our budget and also supposedly "in the know" with cost to build a home and would make sure to give us a design that "would work" within our budget). So, we completely changed course and ended the relationship with the architect (luckily our agreement with him had various stages, so we only owed a small fee for the first round of drawings). When we met with builders we had a list of floor plan must haves & finishes and asked if they had any floor plans that met most of our must haves, with the level of finishes we wanted within out budget. We found a builder that had just built a house that was almost the exact floor plan we were looking for. I think this saved us a lot of time as we didn't have any back and forth with an architect and the builder could quickly/easily bid the job. I have to laugh looking back on it now because we essentially described that we wanted a colonial style (ie, basically a rectangle with a very simple roof line, so it should have been do-able and probably under our budget knowing what I've learned from the GW threads since then!). Not sure how the architect missed the mark on that one....See MoreHindsight being 20/20,what would you do differently?
Comments (75)In grade 11, on the first day of history class the teacher asked us to think if we had done something in our lives that we regret. After that pause he talked about regret, and to live each day of your life deliberately so that in 30, 40, 50 years we could still be happy with the answer to the question. The answer didnt have to be that you have nothing to regret, if you have nothing to regret does might that mean you didnt try enough, push hard enough, risk failure often enough. Just understand the choices you have made to those regrets. I have thought on those words, that day many times. I would never have smoked. I dont smoke now, I never smoked much, I havent smoked for 18 years or so, but I would never have done so. I would have had more sexual partners before getting married. This is something I cant really do anything about and still honor my marriage vows, but I really regret this. One of my sons was critically ill when he was a toddler, I wish I had been a different person through that experience. I had to dig deep inside myself to be very strong, to fight for him, to push through that, but i feel that it left me harder than I was beforehand. I miss that carefree person, I miss how easily she laughed....See MorePond - What would you do differently?
Comments (12)Ok, now that I see your goals...I assume your waterfall will be far enough from your deck that it will be visable from your deck when your sitting down. We layed out our pond with a garden hose; this allowed us to see how the pond looked from both the deck and inside the house as well. You might want to consider a pre-formed small pond. Our son has one -- its small about 4 ft by 8 feet, it has a deep section on one end and a shallow section on the other end. He built a waterfall above the deep section. He has some goldfish in the pond. It's very nicely landscaped and the perimeter has lots of great looking rocks, plants and flowers. It's easy to take care of and the goldfish keep the mosquito at bay. A small preformed pond is a small investment and easy to maintain. Make sure the waterfall faces the house/deck for good luck and prosperity. You can also have more than one waterfall surrounding your small preformed pond by using a diverter on your pump. Most of our small 250 gph pumps do double duty......See MoreWestCoast Hopeful
