Comments (6)An even better idea would be to have 2 identical gardens, one organic and one conventional both using the best available methods. Let the observations begin! In timberloin's link above, the writer suggests that the quote implies we can't grow a significant amount of our own food. I see that quote differently. To me it states the obvious, if a society's individuals spend a great deal of their time and energy just producing food then, as a society, they will not likely advance as far as one who does not. Look at the societies in the third world and those down through history whose lives are/were consumed by simply feeding themselves and you will see societies who have not advanced a great deal in science, the arts, etc.....See MoreTrends you don't like
Comments (44)Great post.. Most of my peeves were already mentioned... I will add: Overuse of pocket doors - they can't use regular hardware so they are difficult to open and close Stacked stone used everywhere...inside and out - most of the time, it is manufactured, not real and it shows! Jack n Jill bathrooms - these just bother me especially if you have a boy and a girl....tough to decorate and "share" that space, especially with teenagers. Outdoor lighting around garages and front doors that is sooo small...off scale. Pam...See Morevinyl flooring and shuddering washer?
Comments (3)Your problem may not be leveling, but getting equal weight on all four feet. Something can read level and only be standing, firmly, on three feet. All's well until the machine gets into spin mode and then it will rock back and forth. The vinyl may also be cushion-y enough to allow the machine to sway back and forth during spins. First, check that all the feet are firmly and evenly resting on the floor. Recheck to make sure the adjustment knobs are snugged up. The feet-checking has to be done in the place where it will be when running so you may have to move other things to get access to the feet. Some people do the adjustment when the machine is spinning with a wash load which is kind of exciting, but you can surely try it while the machine is quiet first. After you find the sweet spot for the feet mark it carefully with tape so if you have to shift the machine for any reason you can get it back to the precise spot without too much trouble. If you think the vinyl floor itself may be the problem, then get a 3/4 thick piece of plywood and lay it on the floor under the machine. I'd start with a piece that's bigger than the foot print qand see if it makes a difference. If it does, then consider if you can tailor it to the machine's footprint more precisely. (It would be great if the plywood spanned two floor joists, not just the cavity, but you can't always achieve that.) Just because you had your machine on the second floor before, it doesn't guarantee that in new constructin which relies on different, modern, structural techniques that you have the same stiffness to the floor. Things just aren't the same as they used to be. (Alas!) HTH, Molly~...See MoreShuddering at choosing a shutter color!
Comments (10)Please do not do the drk gray siding it in no way works with that stone I would leave the white siding and do probably brown shutters with that stone but I actually think the house looks better without them . After you get used to that look and with the new landscaping if you still think you need them you can always add them. I would make the entry the focal point with a wider stoop some nice big plant pots on either side of the stoop and no storm door a new light fixture. The way your entry is you really do not need a storm door and if you like a screen get a phantom one so you don’t hide the door .How about a mailbox on a stand near the entry to your yard....See MorePaula Hankins
