Olivia Rose Austin in a vase
Comments (6)I added 4 Olivia bare roots this spring, and am most impressed with the growth of this rose, its health, its gorgeous pale blooms and how long they last, the shape of the bush....even, mysteriously, the Japanese beetles seem to leave it alone (I have seen a couple on them, but nothing like some of my other roses.) It may turn out to be my favorite of the around 50 Austins I grow/have grown in the past....See MorePlease recommend an Austin rose to me :)
Comments (22)My favorite austin for me so far has been Benjamin Britten, but as mentioned above, the colour is more unique. It is more of a cerise colour. Love the growth & rebloom of it. And the fragrance is delightful. Very fruity. It grew to 4 feet in one season. Not sure about winter die back, but it is rated as very hardy. This was a 2 gallon potted plant, photo taken 3 months after planting. The other austin that did well for me is teasing Georgia. Apparently it can get quite large, but it all depends on your zone. Rebloom was good & growth was excellent. Colour varies with temperatures. As for comments about Abraham Darby - mine did not bloom for me at all its 1st season. Only rose I've planted that did not bloom in its first year. Waiting to see in the spring. Not sure if it's a dud or mislabeled. But it grew 4 new basal breaks & had 6 foot canes in one season. I was just surprised; because of all the glowing reviews of this rose! And because of this forum I'm adding lady of shalott, Munstead wood & boscobel to my garden this year!...See MoreOlivia Rose Austin - how's she doing for everyone?
Comments (70)Diane, I wonder, since Olivia is supposed to be small, if you couldn't move her to the shade where you wouldn't ordinarily plant a rose, like under a tree and see if her color isn't any better. The shade might also keep her smaller. You would have her spot for RR, and you wouldn't really have lost anything whether she lives or dies. The VS Hydrangeas are just blossoming. They're white and chartreuse right now. When I have a progression of the color change, I will post pics. I thought they would be the first to go in this heat. My big leafs are totally cooked, but these paniculatas are fine. I will probably have to move the Blue Enchantresses to total shade. The Endless Summer Originals are doing ok. My grandson cut them back to the lowest node because they fried, but they're coming back beautifully as long as I keep them floating in an over watered bed. I wish we knew if this year is typical of what to expect from now on, or if it is an anomaly. I'm still planting and feeding. I don't want a bunch of baby roses to keep over winter in the garage. Only about half of the rose garden got fed before the heat started, so I waited, but it's been steadily hot, so I'm giving them a light feeding before it's too late this year....See MorePost up photos of your David Austin roses
