Pruning One Cane Joseph's Coat

I'm not familiar with how to prune climbers. I have a Joseph's Coat that is young and was almost dead from last year (chomped down by deer). Now it is coming back - growing nice and strong and straight up; but with just one cane. It's about 3 feet tall with a few side branches (laterals?) that are kinda just starting (I don't know how to say it)... right now they are about 4 inches out from the one main cane. The main cane isn't big and fat - it's kind of thin, but it is straight and strong and healthy.

Should I cut it back to encourage branching as it grows/climbs?

I've always fought - and lost - a war with deer in my yard. I'm finally getting protective fencing. A lot of my roses are coming back now, and this is one of them.
