Would BM classic gray go with medium brown kitchen cabinets?
Hi all. I am thinking of painting my home classic gray with simply white trim. I think it’ll look good based on my research but I am not sure if it’ll go well in my kitchen. I have medium brown cabinets and in a few months I’ll be getting a new possibly white/cream quartz countertop and backsplash. I actually got this idea from the wonderful folks on this forum. My preference first was towards painting the cabinets white but it was pointed out that there won’t be much of a contrast given the floors. I agree with this. Anyways, do you think classic brown will look okay in this kitchen?

Comments (33)I have a post and beam renovation getting ready for paint... in my open concept kitchen/dining/living I have Chantilly Lace on the ceiling, walls and trim in different finishes. I am using Classic Gray down the hall and in the bedrooms. The ceiling throughout is tongue and groove with support beams running through. I need a slightly darker version of Classic Gray that can be used consistently on the ceiling beams, to provide contrast. It needs to be dark enough to contrast from the Classic Gray on the bedroom walls, but not so dark that it overwhelms the open concept area. Comments (19)The carpet sample is our carpet, and the white board represented white baseboards. I LOVE Special Walnut, but it was a smidge more golden than it appears here, and I had to consider that it would yellow more with time. 50/50 Dark Walnut/Weathered Oak is our choice (the bottom one), and I love it too! I'm nervous and have been second-guessing myself all day, but I haven't called them to change the order so I think it's sticking! They stain tomorrow! It was a hard call and it didn't help that one was my favorite at night but I liked a different one in the morning light. Trying to remember that however it's stained, it's a beautiful, neutral background for the thing I already love - furnishings, fabrics, etc. I'll post a picture next week when it's all done. Comments (70)cdisimone - I have very similar color cabinets and granite in my kitchen except my backsplash is lighter and floors are very dark porcelain, wood look tile. I've been looking for a color that will work throughout the majority of my house too. After weeks of deliberating, I started with my dining room and painted Shoji White last night. Not sure I like it....it does not look warm or creamy in my house at all. It looks like a very light cool gray. :-( I was going more for a warm white so I can brighten things up but still have the warm, cozy feel. I'm going to give it a few days before continuing on through the rest of my house. My suggestion is to paint an entire wall or much larger sample on your wall before deciding!...See MoreHELP!!! Comments (7)I think he just tinted primer for better coverage since it was going over gold. Maybe he was going to try and only have to do 1 coat plus tinted primer, but he is going to do 2 coats. Benjamin Moore said that tinted primer may show more blue then the regular paint so I am hoping that gets rid of some of the undertone ice blue that I am seeing. I did put the original sample board next to the paint and it does match up. Good news is that when I put my white cabinet door next to the paint on walls, it gets rid of that blue tone. I am thinking that maybe my old dove white trim is working against the paint and it will be fine when the brighter white trim goes up. Thanks. I did sample classic gray on several walls and it looks great! But I can’t seem to decide if it looks good or not with the brown kitchen cabinets. I actually had a color consultation done and white dove was recommended but it looks too yellow and dingy. Might be just me as everyone else loves this color lol. Below is a picture with and without our 5000k lighting (which we may soften by going for 4000k). First sample on the wall is classic brown and right underneath the yellowish patch is white dove.

Thanks liloregonbug and D walker. I’ll consider white as you suggested. Below picture is from the family room looking into the hallway and kitchen. Maybe I’ll do simply white in the kitchen area/room and the rest classic gray.

This picture is from the foyer looking into the house. Left is the very bright dining area and family room is right at the end. Kitchen to the left. So thinking of doing all walls in classic gray and maybe kitchen area in simply white. I’d love to hear thoughts/suggestions if there are any. Thanks!!

4 years agoI know the popular trend is to paint everything in the house one color, a neutral or white (did beige, then gray/greige, now white or off white).
After everything is neutral we start seeing posts - how do I add color.
Is your wardrobe just neutrals and whites? Is your life really that bland?
I had a white on white home 30 years ago, but had a ton of artwork and colorful furniture that was classic Scandinavian at the time. It was beautiful, but it wasn't really me.
I have never again had just neutral walls. I don't want to live in a home that looks like a builder spec home. Other people who see my home often ask me to help them pick colors for their home.
So how do I pick colors? I first look at the things that must stay (have never had the luxury of not having to keep something (flooring, cabinets, counter tops, treasured or newer furniture).
I then look at the things people own - we buy things because we love the colors - Wall art, sculptures, their wardrobes, jewelry. There is almost always a theme to the things people buy and most of the time their things and the colors that bring them joy are colors that look good on them. Our brains imprint colors associated with wonderful memories and when we see these colors we actually produce dopamine and get a rush of joy. Who doesn't like when they feel like a 10?
Think about the colors that make your heart sing and how they work with the things you own. Think about which colors you want in your home and how the colors make you feel - some will energize you, some make you feel relaxed and calm. Which colors do you want in each room, how will the color you use in the kitchen flow into the dining room and from the dining room into the living room? (I usually pick 3 colors - for really large homes, bigger families, more rooms I may go to 5 colors).
Once you know what colors you love and want in your home it is time to pick your neutral - that background color that works with your colors.
With my colors a taupe works better than anything else. For each of my sisters we picked neutrals that worked with their color palette. After picking the neutral I pick a white that works with the neutral for the trim, ceilings, cabinets. . .
My guess is that the whites in your closet are either white or ivory and not ecru. Why, because White Dove looks dirty to you and so will an ecru shirt.
At the end of the day you end up with a coordinated home that is unique and timeless instead of something someone else decided should be popular.
