No Television?
Comments (12)It's interesting how often this subject comes up on the GardenWeb and how personally people take the comments. Every family is different which is why every house is different which is why designing houses is so difficult. The only reason I can get through the process is that I only have to listen to one couple's opinions and eventually a solution is found that suits their needs but doesn't look like an awkward compromise but it's never quick, simple or obvious. No one should expect to find good ready made design solutions on an internet forum. You're lucky if you see something that takes you a step further toward your goal. Obviously, many people don't like the way other people live and some of them can't resist making comments to that effect. It's like having an endless string of in-laws. A competent designer is never judgmental but that doesn't apply to spectators so free design advice is often worth what you paid for it....See MoreLack Luster Living Room.... AND mirror project
Comments (82)Squirrel Heaven- that makes a big difference. It's so much better that way! Wow. And thank you ALL for everything you have done to make my room SO much better. However, I'm afraid I might be losing the mirror battle... In addition to many of the posters not liking it, now my mom and dad are now giving it the "no" vote! They think its just too much.... and prefer a simpler, modern work of art. I'll still make the decision, but the fact that its so questionable is making me leary - especially given the cost of them... I think I will eventually paint the color of the room a different color, however I'm going to keep it for now. I kind of like it and think I can try to bring in some better pillows, throws, and artwork. So, the paint color is Kilm Beige (sherman williams), our floors took some effort and are a combination of half chestnut, half medium brown.... and another coat of 50% dilluted medium brown. My hubby is in pain thinking of fixing the walls if we lose the mirrors, but I guess that is how it goes sometimes!...See MoreDecorative shelves over tv?
Comments (125)linelle -- I do understand where you're coming from, but for how we live etc, it's better to not bring the piano next to the kitchen table. If we were all adults, I think it would be a good choice. But my kids are 5 and 9, and they have little friends etc. It's our only kitchen/dining table and the farthest I could move it away is 2 feet from the piano...the piano juts out more than the buffet; it's a shallow buffet, 17" deep, and the back is finished, but the piano is 24" deep. So in pictures I do think it would look better, but in practice it would put the dining table right in the middle of the doorway into the kitchen, which would probably not be a good choice. As far as conflict over who uses what and when, that's never been a problem. DH may be stubborn in some ways, but he's a considerate person to live with. graywings -- over the fireplace would mean looking up to watch tv. I like your idea of in front of the fireplace, I am going to run that one by DH. As much as we do like the fp, most days where we live you aren't allowed to burn anything anyway. I can't remember the last time we had a real fire, I have candles in there that I light -- creates a nice mood. You're probably right about keeping just one color on the wall. coll_123 -- I like the ladder shelf idea too. When I get closer to being able to re-do the room I'll look for something like that. My DH said that he really wants a product that is meant to hold components though, so that may be a hard sell. Karenseb -- yes the tv would be too high if over the fp -- the mantle is over 5' tall. Really don't want to mess with changing that, especially if we may move in a few years. k9Arlene -- thanks for the vote of confidence :-) I hope I responded to everyone, I've really appreciated all the ideas and thoughts, especially the critical eyes -- it's challenging to think outside the constraints after living here 13 years. Our home is small and modestly sized, it's not in a hot neighborhood where people do awesome (ie expensive) custom things to make the small spaces work (and if they do, it's often at a loss if/when they sell). I have other outstanding home projects to complete, but DH agreed that once they were finished we could look into re-doing the living room -- like paint and the shelving/layout, everything. It might not be until after Christmas, but I'm feeling so blessed to have such a great start from all of you. Melanie...See MoreOh........ The TV and all the components-- I don't know what to do?!
Comments (42)You have a gorgeous ceiling and fireplace! They should be the stars of the room. I'm a bit of an audiophile myself, so I understand that sound bars and other all-in-one type speakers are completely unacceptable. And the speakers can't point in a different direction or be shoved smack dab up against the EC. They're too close as it is. Having said that, the problem is that the sheer size of the EC and the darkness of the color force the eye right to it instead of the beautiful features of the room, the ceiling and fireplace. This is one of the many reasons I hate TV and have only recently allowed one into my home. I can't stand it when people spend creativity, time, and money decorating a lovely living room like you have obviously done, and then the whole focal point of the room is the TV! I really like what Beverly did above. Rather than try to hide it, which is impossible and just makes it look even more imposing, she played up its good features, added the green, which is a very nice touch, and made it look like it's supposed to be there. The other iterations make it look out of place, although everything was an improvement over the first pics with that big thing on the top. Beverly took the good things from your inspiration photo and made them work in your room! Now you can play up the fireplace and people can see it, and the ceiling, without being overwhelmed by the EC. Your EC now looks like it was invited and welcomed into the room instead of looking like your DH sneaked it in there in the middle of the night and it is most unwelcome. :-) Hope this is helpful! Sincerely, Debbie...See MoreHome Interiors with Ease
