Floor transitions from eat in kitchen to living room

We currently have some old carpet in our living room that we’re looking to get rid of. We have a new baby and she’s crawling everywhere and the carpet is old and gross. We moved in about three years ago but the carpet didn’t bother us much until now. We are thinking about installing vinyl plank, but our living room abuts our eat in kitchen which has wood flooring - would this look strange to put a light oak colored or gray colored plank flooring in directly next to the hard wood? Here are pictures of the current transition from eat in kitchen to living room, and the living room alone.

The best long term solution, that would add value, would be to install the same type of hardwood for continuity. If it is site finished wood, then it is pretty easy for a good wood installer/re-finisher to install and do a pretty good job of matching the old floor. If you wanted to change the stain of all the wood floor in the house, then that would also be a good time to sand down everything, new and old, and re-stain in a new color.

Don't use anything that is a fake wood-look and/or in a gray color!

Yes , it would look bad. Install the same wood you already have, which looks to be a site finished oak. This means you will have to have it all refinished together.

I finally took some pictures of the living room. As you can see, the entire opening is covered by the window, and it is a recessed balcony. I saw from the street, and the windows are not visible. I read the contract, and it only prohibits changing the colors of the balcony's walls, putting satellite dishes and closing the balcony, the administration said that moving the window further outside should not be an issue. I also found three complete from the original remodelation tiles in the cellar, That means I could make something like in the pictures above, combining wood and the same tiles from the rest of the room. I know, the tiles on the balcony are awful, I will replace them later though.

I totally feel your pain! Remodels aren't cheap and it's not easy for everyone to picture what something will look like before its done. I had a similar situation - I just didn't feel that I could afford to redo the tile in the entire house - so I only did part of it. Huge mistake. I "solved" the problem with carpet squares. You can buy just what you need, get pretty creative and install them yourself. I'm sure there are many companies, I used Flor. I recommend getting samples - as it's impossible to accurately assess color from the computer monitor. (Samples are free during promotions and sales are frequent.) I would also suggest that moving the sofa to face away from the kitchen will not only cover up some of the transition, but also define the space in a way to enhance the separation of the rooms.

Probably the best solution visually, as well as economically, is to frame a wide opening with head at 8'-0" between kitchen ceiling and living room ceiling. This will accomodate your cabinet needs and provide a logical spatial transition between the two rooms. A "sloping ceiling" is ridiculous, unless you have other such things elsewhere in your house. Don't ask your builder for any further recommendations which are visual. Good luck on your project.

I will not tell you if different wood floors will look good or bad, but I will tell you matching the existing wood floor will look good.

Thanks everyone! We’ve decided we will just match with the existing wood floor even though it’s not my favorite choice/style of wood flooring. Maybe we will change the finish/stain of it And I will like it more!
