Iris species ID

Hi! Does anyone know if this is the invasive yellow flag iris or a garden-friendly cultivar? Growing (thriving to a stand at least 12 feet in diameter and 2-3 ft tall). Blooming now in NY. Thanks for any help!

YEs! Blue suede shoes! Not only do the descriptions say that it is a little tall and blooms a bit late, but I remember the name! I bought it from an iris farm. Sometimes I just need my memory jogged. Prince of TIdes also sounds familiar and is like a another noid iris. Guess I have to post again with that one to see. Thanks so much, you guys are great!

It looks like i. versicolor or i. virginica to me. The two are usually difficult to distinguish between. Here's my i. versicolor, but I'm still not convinced it was properly id-ed either. Brock

It's native here and blooming on riverbanks and pond edges right now. But its not suitable for a small garden pond. So, of course I have it in my 2sq. metre pond. I chop half of it out every winter.

crikey ... any iris that is 12 feet round.. almost by definition ... is the aggressive invasive one.. lol ...

if it werent,... then it would end up fairy ringed.. or what not ... and the 12 foot clump would need digging and maintaining every few years ... [at which point you would throw out 99% of it .. lol ... and NOT PUT IT AT THE CURB SO OTHER INNOCENT PEEPS WOULD SPREAD IT FURTHER ...]

I probably should have added that this was in cultivation at a public garden where it’s been maintained for a good number of years (possibly longer than my own years on the planet) hence my surprise and uncertainty. Appreciate all your feedback!
