Help with layout of built-in shelves around fireplace
Comments (10)Thanks for your feedback. Hadn't thought of glass doors. That would look great, except we have furniture close enough that the doors wouldn't quite open fully, which may be ok, but we also plan on placing books we are currentlyer ading along with a nice basket for daily used toys. I think that would be a great consideration down the road though, and something we could add later. I will not make them the depth of the fireplace, and can't anyway due to windows/trim. They'll be about 13" I think, which is an inch back from the little stub wall on the right. For the top trim on the side bookshelves I was basically going to copy the fireplace trim but with just the two pieces visible, not three. justgotabme that's exactly what I'm thinking of, and good to confirm that it would still look appropriate even though I don't have windows above the bookshelves. What height do the bookshelves go up to for the best look/proportions? You can see the fireplace is basically a three-piece trim. We can do same height as the existing mantle, or just below that mantle shelf (below the top two pieces of trim), or below all three mantle trim pieces....See MoreBuilt-ins around shallow fireplace
Comments (2)Mine are the same way. We did built-ins anyway and used the mantle and crown molding to tie it all together. It may not be perfect, but I love them and love having a space to display special pieces and seasonal décor. (ignore the hoke-y Halloween stuff, my kids made it all at school so I had to hang it)....See MoreBuilt - Ins around fireplace
Comments (21)I think some of this can be attributed to many homeowner's desire to get away from the "just because" decorative feature. If you don't have a strong idea of what you'll fill them with, what you see is a whole bunch of empty shelves to fill. I've seen too many of these spaces filled with junk, just to feel like it's "decorated". Some of this might also be due to the minimalist design focus that some homeowners are after. A lot of "stuff", even artfully placed, doesn't necessarily lend itself to that. A curveball? Built-ins used to function as media centers to house equipment, and as book shelves. Technology takes out the need for large media spaces, and fewer and fewer people have a ton of books. Maybe a big ol' Kindle collection, but fewer books. Finally, I have no idea- if a person wanted them- why you'd wait until house was finished to have a carpenter build and install. Why wait until your flooring is in, all drywall and painting is finished? Why wait until you get to live with construction? And no- in my area, after work isn't even close to being less expensive than doing it during construction, due to all of that....See MoreBuilt-ins around flush fireplace
Comments (4)The photo you are showing is not a flush fireplace like you have. The shelving would most likely be 12 inches deep, so would stick out next to your fireplace. Quite honestly, I would not do it,although, I think if you put built ins on both sides, you might be able to make it look decent. My fireplace has a built in on the left and none on the right. To make it look balanced, I have a free standing cabinet on the opposite side, because, it just looks weird to have a built in on one side....See MoreRelated Professionals
