Exterior refresh needed
Comments (13)Advice I always recommend concerning any plantings inherited with a new house is to wait a full season to see what it is you have. There just may be treasures! Those shrubs in front of the windows ARE too tall for that spot, but (depending on what they are) might be lovely moved to another area in your yard. Shrubs of that size would be expensive to buy so if you move them, you are ahead of the game. Since you want to replace the roof/siding, the workmen will appreciate not having them in the way and the shrubs won't get damaged. Just something to think about... I, too, like the mockup's darker color with white trim. Perhaps beef up the trim under the upper windows a bit, and repeat the bay window's style of trim/siding underneath over on the right set of windows to match... As to what order to do the needed work, I would say to do the roof first -- that way the new siding won't be damaged. Good luck and please post photos of the finished work!...See MoreExterior: we need a curb appeal refresh!
Comments (10)If you are open to changing the roof line over the walkway, perhaps you could make the roof over the garage separate. Alter the roof over the garage so the hip corner of it ends at the right corner of the garage. Then build a new roof over the entry sidewalk HIGHER than the garage roof . You could still have it be a shed roof, albeit with sturdier looking posts and supporting angles, but have it begin at a height chosen so that when you add the left slope in front of the upstairs, your left slope will be only a few inches or so beneath the height of the upstairs window trim (bottom trim beneath window sill) . As you reach the front corner with your right-sloping shed roof you can add a small decorative left side slope to the right sloping roof in front of the garage, creating the appearance of a forward facing gable... not unlike this small gable in front of the larger gable: the part of the smaller gable that is in front of the larger gable is decorative rather than actual roof covering any interior space. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/192599321544446995/ You might want to build the new roof starting with the front so you are building both sides of the roof, including the left slope in front of the upstairs, first to be sure you have symmetry. You might even consider a triangle window in the right side of the gable with a black panel (or dark tinted glass with "interior" behind it also painted black) in the same shape on the left side of the gable. https://www.pinterest.nz/pin/545850417335577390/...See MoreHelp Please! Comments (1)First, you'll want to get written permission from your landlord to make any changes. Second, you'll need to find out if the property is subject to restrictions from a HOA or Covenants. If all goes well, then you can start considering your options. Washing the siding and cement will work wonders. Matching the lighting, mailbox, numbers, etc. with the door hardware creates a pulled-together look. It's hard to suggest colors or styles without seeing the whole house. If you can't paint the door, consider adding some interest with planters, a door wreath, or other decor....See MoreNeed to paint the house! Exterior refresh!
Comments (23)@hallettco Is this the view you were looking for? You were so helpful. Thanks so much for returing to this thread. @Woody Vaughan or Shaun Fogarty I was thinking of removing the railings for a more open look. I'm guessing I may have to put a step down all the way across? I just want to really update the look of the house overall but keep with the style of the house and not make it something it is not. And thank you for saying its awesome. We do love it and want to stay here for another dozen years. :) @littlebug zone 5 Missouri Yes, this picture is of snow melt along the garage doors. In fact, I just updated those 5 years ago. Yikes. The front landscaping will be redone this year but the pic is early spring. It actually fills in with a bunch of hostas... Those were the only ones I could find otherwise it would be ALL snow. Thanks for the comments.... I appreciate them all....See Moreflopsycat1
