What should I do about this front door?
Comments (21)Well as for dated, this place was built in 1980 in the Spanish Mission style popular in California. It's a historical look, done with typical 1980's lack of attention to detail. For example the light fixtures are hideous and not at all "spanish mission". But I think trying to stay consistent with the intended style would look best - and "real" Spanish Mission homes have usually natural very heavy wood doors with or without iron grates, often ornate. Even window bars are common as a decorative element not for security. So I'm not really trying to update or modernize the place! Obviously this would look too grandiose for our modest townhouse, but this is the style the builders were going for. This one is more similar in scale and feel Maybe all black would work I was afraid it would look too stark. Here is a mockup of all black - of course there would be features visible and shadows/reflections etc so this is not a great mockup. Here are some pictures I took just now from back near the gate- early evening sun was glaring in making the lighting difficult for pictures since I only know how to point and shoot, LOL! But it really illustrates how the door disappears as is. here is the same pic with the door black and green - it's hard to photoshop the correct green because it looks different in all lights. I just cloned the color from the trim. It's basically a forest green with blue undertones. You can see the other plants in the urns a bit better from this angle. Of course the plants are all brand new and will grow much bigger and fuller. I am looking for some wall mounted planters for the open spaces, too....See MoreWhat do I do about gummy paint on cabinet doors??
Comments (2)You're spraying way too wet. You should shoot just enough paint per coat for the paint to self-level. You may be able to let the doors dry fully, sand them smooth, and try again. With that much paint on there, though, it will probably be days before it's set well enough to sand. Wet-sanding will help reduce pilling and sandpaper filling.. Stripping them and starting over might actually be less work, and will certainly make for better results. For sags and drips, here's a dirty trick I learned almost 50 years ago from a kid who worked for a cheap and nasty auto body shop. It's pretty crude, but maybe 2/3 of the time it can save you from having to start over, though it still won't look perfect. Working fast before the paint starts to set up, take a 6-8" strip of masking tape. Holding it slightly slack in both hands, sticky side toward the paint, very lightly touch the center of the tape strip to the sag or drip while the paint is still very wet. The excess paint will stick to the adhesive and, if you're lucky, what's left will somewhat level up. For large sags, use several pieces of tape....See MoreWhat colour should I paint my front door?
Comments (19)Just looking at your home again, Nina. It's really cute and while I agree with others that you could make a larger impact painting the whole house, I also realize that's not always in the budget. In the meantime, I'd take a que from Beverly's rendering and leave everything as is except I'd paint the portion above the door white to match the door and garage. The light fixture above the mailbox looks a little small so you could add something a little bigger and contemporary. You could install it a little more to the right to help balance the space since the door is off centered in that strip of siding. I'm not sure what your bushes are but I'd try to trim up the one to the left of the front door and probably replace the one to the right with something a little smaller. Small boxwoods below that front bottom window would look very nice. Edge out your beds and add some mulch, power wash your front stoop and sidewalk and it will give you a fresh look for your home. Whatever you end up doing I hope you enjoy it....See MoreWhat color should I paint this deck and front door?
Comments (2)I would just do a deeper red than what you have on your front door now, but if it gets a lot of sun maybe it fades quickly? Did what you have start out darker? Black to go with your shutters is an option too. I don't know why the deck would have to match the door. If the deck is on the back of the house no one can see both of them at the same time, plus matching those two just isn't necessary. I would paint the deck a color similar to what you have now, but more brown, less red....See Moreshivece
