What are you doing to make your house enrich your life?
Comments (38)I've been thinking about this a lot since it was first posted. I'm not sure I'll be very coherent, but my rambling will make sense (mostly) in my head. We bought this house/property 5.5 yrs ago, it was a neglected house, but the lot was to-die-for (middle of town, near a great park, LARGE (for in town), 7 minute commute to work, on a corner, with lots of mature trees). We stalked it for years prior while the old lady went off her rocker (sadly not exaggerating) as we lived just 2 blocks away. So that's part of our crazy plan- to not contribute to sprawl (it just makes me sad). I live in an area of the most fertile soil in the world- we should not be building houses here. So doing a demo/in-fill makes my heart feel a little joy. We want to create a legacy for our children. I know they may move away and not want this house when we die, but I hope it can be paid for and provided to them as an inheritance. Or maybe they'll want it b/c we're hoping it really creates a love of 'home' and family. We hope to do a lot of the work ourselves (being big DIYers and having done almost everything to the 2 homes we've lived in) and hope to involve the kids in some of that work so that they have some ownership. I really want to create a home with minimal maintenance as the last 2 homes have been non-stop with one thing or another. Like today when our kitchen sink was running slow and after snaking it it was fine- only to go to the basement and realize all water was now backing up from the floor drain. As if mowing, trimming bushes, and cleaning off the back porch from winter wasn't enough to keep us busy today. So new construction is a must. I get water in the basement every time it rains, the joists are termite eaten, there's adequate space (another 200 sq ft would be PERFECT), but it's not built for accessibility for overnight guests and my FIL is in a wheelchair (as is MIL, but she doesn't stay with us) and my mother has had 2 hip replacements and 2 spine surgeries. 1st floor guest room is also a must. When we bought this house we interviewed architects to see about an addition and major remodel- for 17K more the builder/designer could demo the existing house and build the same sq footage as a shell, BUT NEW (my eyes and ears and back like the sounds of that!). That sold us on living here and making do with 3 layers of wallpaper in the dining room, floor that are mushy, a 1 person kitchen, no tub, on and on and on. So we're living in the house until it's paid off so that we can get more of what we want. In the meantime we will continue to play around with plans and have done lots of reading and research. There are some things we'll be able to re-use- some light fixtures, the garage door opener, faucets, all the appliances, and I'm hoping to buy some things in advance and just store until needed. My husband and I agree on quality over quantity. We don't want a McMansion, we both want a rectangle (Colonial). Preferably one that's more energy efficient than our current home (not hard to do), and keeps us warm/cool/dry. A place to live in for as long as I can conceivably live alone (my grandma made it to 95 with her hardy Midwestern genes). The most current set of tinkering plans have very little in the way of compromise- I think if we can do that and actually build the thing we can call it a success and check something off our bucket list while drinking coffee sitting in our screened-in porch on a Sunday morning knowing all we have to do is mow and trim bushes (and maybe clean off said porch :))....See MoreInspired by Shades: what do you do with your smaller homes hallway?
Comments (12)Eld: first of all, thank you so much for your thoughtful suggestions! You are really educating me here. It never occurred to me that anything other than white would be the solution to a dingy looking area. But what you said makes perfect sense. Funnily enough, I was actually going to use Light Navajo White, because that is what I just used in my kitchen. Because my house is so small, I really want to use the same colors and materials throughout everything except two bedrooms and the bathrooms. So same flooring, paint colors, etc. in the library, LR, eat-in kitchen, and hallway. I thought it would help the visual flow of the space and unify it, while at the same time making it look and feel bigger. The light navajo white says it has a hint of brown. It is definitely not a super white white. Do you think it would work in the hallway? Also, Eld, yes, the door on the right in the picture is the back door of the house. It's actually located about in the middle of the length of the house. The hallway, if you measure starting at the Sterilite drawers on the left, is just over 16' long. There are three other doors off it besides the back door. The main bathroom is just before the laundry on the left, my room is on the left just after the laundry, and Joy's room is at the very end. I completely agree that better lighting would make a huge difference! Murraysmom, thanks for sharing! I love water colors! Your little hallway sounds peaceful, with the softness of a light green and the painting. I don't know if you've seen any of cpartist's colored pencil art--she posts on the kitchen forum and sometimes here as well, but her drawings are so gorgeous! She is to drawing what Shades is to glass mosaics. My dream wall would have a large cpartist work of flowers in a vase hanging up and Shades' glass lizard climbing up the wall! Eld, hahaha! Every time I write your name, my stupid phone changes it to either "Elf" or "Elderly!" If I missed any when I proofread, my apologies in advance, lol!! :-) Chris, if that mural is to cover up a "design mistake," then I say Praise the Lord for design mistakes! My comments are glowing because I truly love your art!! And I'm so glad you have this "therapy" to work on while you're caring for Joe in the sunset of his life. You are one strong woman, and I am so inspired by you. :-) If I get really industrious in the next few days, haha, I'll post a floor plan of my house. But I'd love to hear more stories about all your hallways or other awkward spaces you have or want to decorate! :-)...See MoreSince the pandemic, what are you doing more or less of?
Comments (40)I'm not doing much different. instead of going out 2x a week I go out once every 7-10 days. I spent more money at the store the first 4 wks or so than I normally do. but then knowing I wouldn't be going out much I bought up extra food, dog food, cleaning and paper products when I could find them. lots of times I'd put off getting something until my next trip out (that same week) but now I don't know when that'll be really, so good to have a bit of stocked up here in case I don't get out. a few times I went out and only got a few things (milk, eggs, bread type). so I'm sure the $ amount equals out. also with this 'opening back up' we can't be sure it won't get a bit worse out there. now a lot more traffic is out there and I don't like going out in that either. I'm going to attempt an order at W with delivery and see how that goes. there's nothing on the list that is needed asap so if they can't get it here for a day or 2 I'll be ok. I find I don't even like going out every 7-10 days anymore... so maybe I'll do delivery more often in the future....See MoreDo you find the more you stay home the more you want to stay home?
Comments (29)We've been splitting our time 50/50 between Los Angeles and our house in Cathedral City (Palm Springs are), and we have nice, large outdoor spaces at both houses. I would like to have people over, but I don't mind staying in our houses for this period. I miss going to fabric stores. We have so much to do at both houses - much of it maintenance - that we do not run out of things to do. I think I prefer the house in CC because it has a pool, but it is a bit expensive to heat the pool in the dead of winter. It's no more expensive than cooling that house in the summer, however. We have bikes at both houses and go for bike rides whenever we want, although I will not ride my bike in CC in the summer - I just spend more time in the pool. My original plan was to rent the house in CC for additional income, and so our budget is stretched pretty thin now. Cathedral City put a moratorium on short term vacation rentals one week after we closed on that house, and so we haven't been able to rent it anyway. We're very glad to have it as a safe get-away, since not only are we prevented from air travel - we cannot afford it at this time. There are lots of places for us to go for hikes or mountain biking in southern California, and so there's always that. I stopped going to the beach on a regular basis when we moved from Venice to Westchester in 2009, and I do miss that a bit, but it's still there. However, I will not be going back to the Venice boardwalk until the pandemic is over. To answer the question: No, I do not find that the more I stay at home the more I want to. I definitely want to get out, but I'm not climbing the walls and am reasonably content....See Moremojomom
