Can I spray paint my kitchen island?
Comments (3)Sure, you can paint the body (sides) of the island. I wouldn't do the top (but figure you're not referring to that anyway ;) I would not use spray paint in the kitchen. I've used lots of it on smaller projects but always outdoors and always in the empty lot behind our house. That stuff can drift pretty far, and the fine paint mist when dried is not easy to get off surfaces you don't want it on. Also, you would need mineral spirits to clean up 'drift', which can damage more delicate surfaces. If spray paint drifted onto walls, you'd be looking at repainting to cover it up. I would suggest using paint from a can. One of my all time favorite cabinet painting jobs is girlwithaspirin's. She's not been around lately, but here is a link I dug up from the boards here of a before and after of her kitchen. The paint job on her cabinets is just amazing! (Makes me want to do mine over again ;) The color she used was Ben Moore Bittersweet (oil-based) and am pretty sure it was in Satin finish. Comments (4)With the bases, I had to do two coats of the brush-on. With the doors and drawers, I did one coat of spray, but I did 2 swipes across each area as I sprayed (3 on a few that had a lot of grain)--enough to make sure it was covered; and spraying is such a fast process! You can also use the brush to catch anything you may have missed with the spray. I sprayed outside btw. NOTE: The poly coats at the end are CRITICAL; otherwise, the spray looks uneven (not color but application), but the poly completely erases the spray-over/hazy application look from spraying (you'll know what I mean if you try it). I was really worried after the first spraying because the application looked bad, but I moved forward--and so glad I did because the poly is a miracle! Looks perfect....See MoreHelp either kitchen cabinet knob or handle?
Comments (10)I'm struggling with the same decisions. Is your cabinet color P&F's Buttercream? Have you picked the finish yet for knobs/pulls? I've had bin pulls on my white painted cab drawers at the lake and knobs on the upper cabinet doors. The bin pulls are easy to grab (I think they're Top Knob's "Somerset") and they've been great in keeping the white painted finish pristine even after years of use. I'm inclined to go with this type pull again for function, but I worry they might look a little country farmhouse in my suburban home. I sometimes have to clean around the knobs on the uppers. Especially if I've opened them while doing a lot of baking during the holidays there is a greasy sheen left behind from where my knuckles touch the doors. I get to it soon, so I've never had to scrub them. But it's something to consider if you have kids/teens who will be opening your white doors regularly. Are your cabs inset/overlay? My new ones will be inset -which I've never had before - and I wonder if one style suits them over another....See Morekitchen cabinet knobs vs pulls? paint first?
Comments (25)I've painted plenty of kitchen and bathroom cabinets, in my own house and my daughter's, and recommended it for clients who hate their existing (but in good shape) cabinets and want a change. I'm getting ready to paint the cabinets in my new house, too. It's not rocket science, and if it's done properly they will look fine and hold up well. The cabinets need to be sanded/deglossed (either will work) and a good bonding primer applied. I don't sand extensively, just enough to dull the surface. I've always used an oil-based primer, but there are other good bonding primers. Then two coats of paint are applied. I've personally used Benjamin Moore Advance, Cabinet Coat, Sherwin William Pro-Classic, and even just the sample color can from Benjamin Moore and they've all worked well. I use a brush for cutting in and then a small foam roller for the flat parts. The trick to painting cabinets is allowing enough cure time before using them. This means no closing drawers/doors all the way for several weeks, and generally babying them a bit that first month. But one they cure they are great. Unless your painters are truly terrible I can guarantee you'll be happy with your painted cabinets. And white kitchen cabinets with new counters and backsplash absolutely will *visually* lighten your kitchen. It's a tried-and-true staging trick, to use white/light colored accessories and white lampshades to lighten and brighten a dark room. If you want bin pulls vs knobs, you may need to fill in the holes before painting....See Morefreedomplace1
