poll: your favorite nectar plant
Comments (29)DOes anyone have good luck with other verbenas? I just bought some of the lower growing (groundcover type) that are like 1940's lipstick red! I sure hope they work, too. I also got a lantana 'Irene', which is a multi-color lantana as well. Anyone try that one? I am trying to attract hummers, too, so maybe the salvia I got (pink friesland) will attract them as well. I know the Texas salvia (pink/white) is beloved by the sulphurs for sure. They headed straight for it. These were orange sulphurs. The Cloudless Sulphurs liked the red hibiscus best. So sometimes it depends on the butterfly species, which nectar plant they like the best. Linda, my asclepias curassavica bloomed continuously, but then, as you might recall, it is located between those two pine trees, so got some relief from that hot, hot west sun last year. Maybe that helped? Can you give me the species name for blackfoot daisies? I planted a patch of 25 liatris spicata bulbs, so hope that helps. The red hibiscus coccineus is not too far away; my sunflowers have reseeded, and I have been pinching them back so they will be fuller this year; and I planted my sasafrass tree out there, too. It hasn't died yet, BTW, stem still is green. I think I'll put the ironweed out there, too, since it is only a 3-footer. No one mentioned button bush (cephalanthus occidentalis), which I thought was supposed to be a great nectar plant. I'm trying it for the first time this year. Comments (28)The pole is waaaay up there, at least 14' or 16'. Just sky for a background now, and I don't know how birds feel about their nesting sites. Sparrows and starlings probably could care less! ha. My house is white with a black standing seam roof. I'm leaning towards white with dark green trim myself; but if you look at the photo I posted of the old house on Nov. 13th, it almost looks like the siding of the house was a russet color with green trim. Then on other areas (which aren't in the pic) it looked like it may have been green with red trim. You know my favorite color for outside is "Tinkertown Green",so I could trim it in that (w/white). Comments (38)thanks for the votes, Irawon! I am going to have to move them around a little... Popo will certainly get mention in the final list... hard to put it in a color category... definitely blue green early in the season, so I believe we'll put it in blue... but it does usually green up pretty early. I have the same problem with Cutting Edge... Teaspoon, because it is so cute when its small, has gotten a reputation as a mini - but if you just plant it and grow it for a few years like any other hosta clump, it will actually become a medium sized clump of small leaves... Zilis puts it in small... I put it in medium... we'll have to work that out later, but it clearly is a favorite for lots of folks... Candy Dish will be in the Medium category, Lakeside Looking Glass is too. Lakeside Black Satin - it's right on the margin of being large, but I believe it is typically medium in most garden situations... so we'll keep that one there......See MorePBC Design + Build
