I enjoyed the video because she is beautiful and easy to look at, especially when she is smiling. Too bad she felt she needed to degrade herself with soft porn to get ahead in life.

I am curious, what Melania's achievements as a First Lady are you proud of?

If Melania could get her husband to "be best" and stop bullying I'd say that she accomplished something. Until then...

Given Melania’s “internet pictorials” I don’t think she qualifies for the “lady” moniker.

The only things I can think of that our First Lady has done for sure are dress beautifully and keep quiet.

I suppose to some, those are admirable accomplishments...

Well I have to disagree with that one Joaniepoanie.

I think it’s past time that we stopped tying a woman’s claim to respect on whether she has met our expectations of how she is allowed to use her own body.

To me “lady” should be a term that is synonymous with “girl” or “woman” and all it connotes is that the person identifies as a girl or woman. The moral character of the person is irrelevant to that descriptor for me.

She’s kept her child out of the limelight and surrounded him with people who love him and presumably want what’s best for him.

I have to admit that I think that is a major accomplishment in this day and age.

Miss Lindsey—-using “lady” in reference to the song in the OP and the usual interpretation of the word. I consider myself a liberal, but “internet pictorials” of any Flotus just does not compute for me. I certainly would not want anyone’s daughter looking to Melania as a role model for that and other obvious reasons. Repubs would be enraged if it was a Dem Flotus—-so, in addition, the hypocrisy is front and center on this one.

I have no qualms about her keeping Baron out of the limelight, all speculation aside as to why; however, none of us have any way of knowing what kind of mother she is.

I find the song/video really bizarre, strange song choice. Like she is in some kind of music video for a music channel. Just weird bordering on creepy for a First Lady.

It's made by some strange site probably not affiliated with much of anything from what I can tell.

I happen to be one of the people who think that Melania (aka *melanoma to me) has done great things for America and women specifically. She has proven that we do not need to sacrifice a woman to the American need for a national Mommie. Normally we take a highly qualified female and force her to stay home and bake cookies and tell everyone how much she loves it. You can argue that the women are complicit in this. Michelle comes to mind. A brilliant mind reduced to talking about youthful fat. Valuable in a way though not to conservatives who don't want a democratic black woman to point out American youth are prone to fat. They squalled loudly about it. I take them at their word. So at least 30% didn't hear it. What on earth does a spouse have to do with the presidency? Why do we know more about them than say Barron? What is he up to these days other that being very up (tall)? Melania doesn't say much of anything about anything and we have survived. She isn't touting the troubles of children affected by Covid-19 afflicted parents or any thing else to do with American youth and I am happy to see that. Because we the people did not hire the spouse of the president and they get paid nothing to take our abuse over how they fail us.

*Melanoma because I have had trouble remembering her name in the past and for some look say reason that is the word presented to my mind.

If I were Melania I wouldn't consider this "tribute" any kind of honor.

The song perfectly describes the kind of trophy wife that Melania is. A piece of arm candy with no thoughts of her own. You can leave her alone (ignore her), and she won't complain. She exists only to please her man.

Well, she's all you'd ever want
She's the kind I like to flaunt and take to dinner
But she always knows her place
She's got style, she's got grace, she's a winner
She's a lady
Oh, whoa, whoa, she's a lady
Talkin' about that little lady
And the lady is mine

Well, she's never in the way
Always something nice to say, and what a blessin'
I can leave her on her own
Knowin' she's OK alone and there's no messin'
She's a lady
Oh, whoa, whoa, she's a lady
Talkin' about that little lady
And the lady is mine

Well, she never asks very much
And I don't refuse her
Always treat her with respect
I never would abuse her
What she's got is hard to find
And I don't want to lose her
Help me build a mountain
From a little pile of clay, hey hey hey

Well, she knows what I'm about
She can take what I dish out, and that's not easy
But she knows me through and through
And she knows just what to do and how to please me
She's a lady
Oh, whoa, whoa, she's a lady
Talkin' about that little lady
And the lady is mine
Yeah, yeah, yeah, she's a lady
Oh, whoa, whoa, she's a lady
Talkin' about that little lady

I can’t remember the last Flotus that stayed home and baked cookies, although we hardly ever see Melania so maybe that’s what she’s doing all day..lol.

Michelle had been a working mom so maybe she saw it as a chance to be home with the girls. I doubt any Flotus having a regular job would work for many reasons. No doubt she had Barack’s ear every step of the way and he sought her advice on many issues. Hillary certainly didn’t sit home. In both cases we got two extremely intelligent women I think accomplishing a lot, albeit more behind the scenes.

I don’t think a FL is obligated to take up a cause. Melania would have been better off not doing so—-it’s trotted out once or twice a year for show and, considering Trump’s everyday behavior, it’s downright laughable on several levels.

I have to confess I didn’t watch the video at all.

One of the worst songs in history, my goodness.

But I still don’t give a hoot that she posed for nudes. It’s her body and if it was consensual what do I care? I don’t.

And I don’t care that my kids know that either. They will choose their role models based on shared values, I hope, and being unashamed of their bodies is just fine by me. It’s just skin.

Fully agree with you but what I find interesting is that consensual selling of your body for viewing ( what Melania did) is legal in US but consensual selling of your body for touching ( prostitution ) is not.

Yes Joaniepoanie, I have seen the photos.

It simply does not bother me.

If a person who was already in a prominent political position including First Spouse decided to pose nude I would question the propriety because bringing that sort of attention to the office would be unacceptable in my opinion.

But her life before politics as a private citizen is of no concern to me, unless she broke the law.

Good point, actually. I think we go overboard in treating some people like our personal property as far as putting them under a microscope. Yes it's important to watch for illegality and real impropriety, but yikes, sometimes it's time to lay off and look at something else.

I have to admit that the term “lady” (as its masculine counterpart “gentleman”) implies a certain level of classiness. While I do not pass moral judgement on Melania and agree that she and women in general is free to do as she likes with her body, I don’t think that allowing salacious pictures of oneself to be disseminated to all and sundry is classy, for women _or_ men. For instance, picking one’s nose in the street isn’t considered immoral, but I doubt anyone would consider it classy.

Oh, like Hillary sold the United States State Department for donations to The Clinton Foundation?

Like Joe Biden sold influence to Ukraine and Barisma to give his no good loser son a nice income?

At least Melania stayed in her lane, controlling that which was hers and not influence and power entrusted to her by the tax paying public.

Why in the world would another person's opinon bother someone?

I belive in freedom to think and choose what we want; I cannot imagine being bothered or even caring what another person thinks about. If this in indicative of a liberal mindset, no wonder they seem to be so angry and upset all the time!

Let's be honest here. Al did not do Melania any favor by posting this thread on Hot Topics as Melania is getting more barbs than kudos and that was totally predictable.

For the record, I do not expect anything from Melania as she does not hold an elective office and to be honest, I do not care how she looks, what she wears or what she does with her time. I do not see anything in particular to admire about her but on the other hand, I have no reason to criticize her either.

soupgirl: Let's be honest here. Al did not do Melania any favor by posting this thread on Hot Topics as Melania is getting more barbs than kudos and that was totally predictable.

Okay; my honest opinion is, the predictable negative comments about Melania have more to do with the dislike of her husband, and more with the political leanings of the majority of our frequent posters at Hot Topics, than valid and substantial criticisms of her behavior as First Lady.

I actually support that result, because I support free speech, and I know that even when a majority disagrees with my opinion, that doesn't disprove the validity of my own viewpoint. Our opinions can exist side by side, in this country, and I'm grateful for that.

I'm grateful that Al posted this thread. When the national news is dominated by difficult things like the loss of lives and economic damage from Covid19, the wrongful killing of a citizen by law enforcement, and the resulting violent protests across the country, I welcome the addition of a positive topic to the mix. Melania Trump is serving her role of First Lady with dignity and grace, and she suffers no harm whatsoever because of any voices here that exercise their right to post their disapproval.

And as a naturalized citizen of the US, my guess is she values free speech as much or more than I do; and I place a very high value on it.

My comments are not criticism of Melania though I could have commented on her spreading birtherism. Nasty. Based on that one act she is contemptible but that is beside the point.

I am not making much headway with my position that we have no right to have any expectations for the spouse of a president. The spouses of the leaders of other countries can even have careers of their own. Why are we always so backwards? Why has this role grown out of nowhere. Early spouses simply acted as hostesses in their homes. Now they have to have public causes and get picked on. I do hope that the next female spouse will give this whole thing a pass but I doubt that will happen. Notice I don't expect a male spouse to be expected to act the role of national nanny.

ETA I also never heard the words to that song. Oh dear.

We have a right to a First Lady of whom we're not embarrassed or ashamed. This situation feels like a new low to me.

I've been embarrassed to read that she's multi-lingual, yet clearly she is not. Which is fine, unlike Hericles, I don't fault her for not speaking English so well; not everybody does, no crime there. Ivana did pretty well w/ it though.

What offends is the LYING again. Why must they lie & say she's multi-lingual when she's not? That's much more common in Europe than here, also more obvious. I am tri-lingual myself & one can see & hear such facility among those who have it or don't.

Also, as an American who grew up overseas, I already know how many wrong impressions foreigners have about us, our government & our people. This sure does not help.

Patriciae, I don't know if you remember, but I've posted in the past that I agree with your viewpoint about presidential spouses. I have no problem with any presidential spouse that wants to step into the traditional role of hostess, and organize events like the Easter Egg Roll, etc, and oversee White House holiday decorations, but I really dislike the expectation that they're required to do so.

I've always said this strange expectation will die a hasty death, the first time we have a female president, and a First Gentleman in the White House. That alone tells me it's an outdated social expectation we should be ready to move beyond.

I'm fine with the path Melania has taken in regards to these activities, but I'd also be fine if she'd decided to distance herself even more, because I'm ready to see more presidential spouses break down that tradition.

(I started to "like" your post above about this, but only hesitated because I wasn't quite sure how to take your comment about Melania/Melanoma.)

I think the position we share may not widely held, but I agree with you.

I agree with you, too, patriciae, in that I do not think Melania owes anything to the public as she has not been elected to any office and is not paid a salary. Some first ladies have been active and take up various causes, some have not, and whatever path a first lady or a first man chooses, as long as it is lawful, should be respected. I further think we should permit those who choose a low profile to maintain it and for that reason I, personally, would not make her the subject matter of a thread on Hot Topics but obviously people can differ on that score.

I was taught to read via a method called look say. You read context not words. It does very weird things to your mental process. You don't sound the word, you understand it. It is just a funny juxtaposition that Melanoma is the word my mind will continually replace Melania when I actually have to say her name. Oddly enough someone else on this forum made the same replacement. It is just a mouthful of a word.

I am happy to see at least some agree. Still I think that the idea of women as helpmeets is so entrenched that even time with a male spouse will not shift it.

I'm not Al but I'd take a wild guess that Al liked the video (I know I loved it) and posted it because he thought others might also enjoy the beautiful video of our First Lady (I sure did enjoy it). I doubt Al was looking to do Melania any favors or cared if people flocked in with ugliness. That kind of ugliness is the norm and I'm sure Al is well aware of that.
